I am having trouble with getting back on my feet not financially, more socially. I feel strange seeing people I went to school with over 10 years ago. Has anyone had this experience? Thanks! ; )

I lived in Europe. I have returned to Australia. Where I was living in Europe was a small town and no where near as fast as my home in Australia. Europeans are layed back like Australians but a little better travelled. It's a different culture also.
Thanks for your answers, they were ALL very helpful. ; )

I'm European, lived in the US for five years and moved back then... I had a very hard time readjusting to life here! I didn't really see anyone of my old friends but making new friends was hard too. I tried lots of things, joining clubs, going out, the best was joining a group of ex-pats but I'm not sure if there are groups of Europeans in the US. Even though I wasn't an American & had only been there for five years I got along loads better with them than with Europeans! Other than that, I'm afraid I don't really have any advice beyond give it time... you'll probably get used to most things again eventually, at least I did.

sometimes its hard when you've been overseas and experienced so much more than the people you left behind its hard to relate to them. also, if you come home to somewhere that is less populated than where you were, everything seems to be going in slow motion. its bizarre. i think the only way to fix it is to throw yourself back into it, those people you went to school with arent going to be the same, and neither will you but as grown ups, you should be able to find some common ground. if all else fails, theres a lot more of the world to discover!

Being abroad gives you a REALLY different perspective on the world and life, one that typically isn't shared by a lot of people in this country (provincial as we often are). In my short (but intense) trips to places to Costa Rica, Nigeria, and the Gambia, I have returned feeling like there's a whole lot of world that we know very little about. Treasure your unique perspective, reach out to people who share it, and don't worry too much if you find you have grown a lot and no longer have a lot in common with past acquaintances.

I have more or less, when your in school you share a common bond, like most of the answers it does take time, and when you come back sometimes you see things with a different set of eyes, because of your unique experiences, and there are times that we just outgrow our old acquaintances and find new ones.

where were you, and where did you come from, as well as what were the circumstances?

I feel your pain on a lot of this. I have spent the majority of the last 3 years away from home (not by choice) and now it all seems so foreign to me.

Everyone says it just takes time,.. so I guess both of us are going to find out :)
