Yes. Nobody knows the state of another's soul at the moment of death, and the Church teaches that we are to give everybody the benefit of the doubt...we entrust their soul to God's mercy...just like everyone else's.

most often no. however the church is more accepting of the idea that mental illness may have been so severe as to not allow for a person to understand what they were about to do . so in some cases this is viewed as not acceptable but at least enough for the person to be buried in the roman catholic cemetary.

Nothing to add to Humanity's answer. He or she is absolutely correct.

Added for Sara's benefit:

In order for a person to commit a deadly sin and thus be condemned, three conditions must be met:
1. The act must be a seriously wrong act.
2. The person must know that the act is seriously wrong
3. The person must have done the seriously wrong act of their own free will.

In the case of suicide, a person may be in such mental and emotional anguish that he or she is not responsible for his or her actions.

Yes they can, this is one of the good changes of Vatican ll, before this the church would not allow a suicide burial but since the thinking has changed and it recognizes that most suicide cases are not totally responsible for their actions and leave their fate to Gods mercy, while doing what can be done to comfort the grieving family.

No, suicide is considered a sin. People who commit suicide are considered to be irrevocably condemned to hell and cannot be buried in holy ground. At least, unless the Vatican has changed their policy on that and I haven't heard about it. (I don't personally agree with that, though.)

I'm not catholic so I'm not sure. But don't Catholics believe that suicide is unforgivable? And if so, then I don't think that they would have a catholic buriel....
