I am 48 years old, I have worked with the public, been involved in many social functions and I have yet to meet people who "Shove" religion down my throat. Even the Jehova Witnesses that have come to my door have been polite and just handed me a few things to read and gone on their way. I am a Christian and I do not preach to others. So I am curious...where are all these talked about Bible Thumpers?

I just wanted to add...I will share my faith with others, but only if they are willing to do so. I think it is pointless to "Preach" to someone if they are not willing to hear what you have to share. All that does is turn more away from Christianity.

It is refreshing when a non-Witness acknowledges the gentle nature of Jehovah's Witnesses' ministry.

A too-common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door to get a householder to "convert". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!

That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.

(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Religion has given the Bible a bad name............The Bible has a wonderful hope for mankind and it's open to all if they could only understand the Bible.

The Bible is like a puzzle of a beautiful picture. If all the pieces go together you could see the picture, but for some reason pieces that don't belong in the puzzle were put in and causes confusion. People give up reading the Bible and hence have no hope, and that's what Satan wants to do. On the other hand, some serious Bible students try to take out these pieces and help people see the truth of God's word and the beautiful picture it really is. for example.........the Bible reveals a beautiful picture of the resurrection hope, but a piece of the puzzle was put in to distort that picture. The immortal soul make the resurrection hope seem useless, because it teaches that you really never die, you just move on to something else. That's not what the Bible teaches.........so you see. Some know the truth about the Bible and their zeal and love for others will move them to preach it. This is what people dislike....having someone telling that what the churches have been teaching them all along was wrong.

Thank you. I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and get tired of hearing these, often made up, stories. While I know some people, yes we Witnesses are people too:), have trouble taking no for an answer, but for the most part we will politely leave if asked to. Often when I see someone complain about Witnesses bothering them and constantly coming, they say how, I take their magazines, and they keep coming. I think they miss the point that if they do not want us to think they are interested they should not show false interest.

Sadly there are pushy people in EVERY group. One friend of my parents, many years ago, knew everyone in his area. Few of them were interested in listening to him. Still he always thought they were. Due to his age they realised he was just trying to be kind. I know it is hard but when someone is pushy sometimes it helps to think about why they are so interested in sharing.

Meanwhile, one time in Wal Mart a woman ran her cart into me, when I asked if she was OK she gave me her religous brochures. I explained that I am a Witness and.... she handed me a booklet that was entitled Lies Witnesses Tell. I politely declined. After I thought about it I had to laugh. Wal Mart has a NO soliciting policy. This woman wanted to "save" me. She felt it so important she was willing to make her self look nuts. I had to appretiate that level of devotion.

PS We Witnesses are in fact Christian. Have a nice day.

I even do not recognize why some Christians are so pushy. they merely are. i imagine at the same time as particular Christian communities have a Jewish man or woman of their midst, they might experience as if they are getting more advantageous 'factors' in the adventure that they convert someone who's Jewish. imagine about it, if Jewish human beings starting up replacing to Christianity on mass, it would want to provide Christianity so a lot extra credence. you want to sit and concentrate on a tremendous and strategic thanks to wrestle the pushy Christians that you're encountering, because they don't seem going away.

I agree...I don't think I've ever been randomly "assaulted" by a pushy Christian.

I'd say the most irritating experiences I've had with this is some people in my own Church!

I'm Catholic and there who are some who think that they're "more Catholic" than everybody else in the Parish. They're the ones who give me the evil eye or tell me I'm gonna burn if I choose to not participate in some sort of optional activity...such as saying the Rosary every day or the Stations of the Cross at Lent...or whatever.

Both of those are fine and wonderful devotions and traditions...but I personally choose to not do them very regularly...but so what?

I have been wondering the same thing. I cannot find one and I have been looking for one for some time. The only time I have ever experienced people being rude or ridiculing about religiion is when they find out that I am a christian. They get uncomfortable, watch what they say, hold me to a higher standard than they do themselves and make fun of my faith. I get comments like, "christians aren't supposed to act or talk like that"; "why doesn't God do something about this?", or "why does your God allow these things to happen?" If someone in my life is not a follower of the same faith as myself, I do not treat them any differently than I want to be treated. Yet they expect me to have answers about the God they don't believe in. It is very confusing at times. Why don't people just agree to disagree and let things work out in its own time?

I am totally agree with you in some point. I am also a Christian. I think it different between sharing God's word and shovel God's word to someone. After I got save, I always want to know more about God. I went to churches to listen to what someone else have to say about what I read in the Bible. Even though, I didn't believe everything from every pastors, but I still go to worship God with the churches. God's word is inside of me, and can't be kept for only myself. I would feel grief inside of me if I have a chance to share but say nothing. Right now, I am in the point of my life that I am stress out with a lot of homework that I don't know how to do some of them, and couldn't get that much help out there or anywhere. It has to do with computer, so I have to practice it myself like one of Yahoo answers advise me to do. People around me didn't do so well. Someone I love very much is ill. I might loose him. Only thing is hold me up right now is the joy in my heart with the word of God. He is good to me, and I thank Him for my life. To answer to your question is something I enjoy sharing.

You should be sharing your faith. My opinion is that the "pushy, Bible thumpers" are probably not filled with the Holy Spirit. Or they are so immature as Christians they are not operating in the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit gives discernment and wisdom to speak about your faith in a spirit led manner. Without the promping of the Holy Spirit it is unlikely that people will have success at sharing their faith.

Why would any Christian try to shove their religion down the throat of a fellow Christian? If they know (or think) you are a Christian they have no reason to try to convert you and as a Christian you are presumably fine with living with Christian influences in society and laws.

I've had many Christians try to convert me ("save" me) when they've found out I'm an atheist. My life is effected by Christian influences in society. Non-Christians are forced to follow laws that are based on a religion they don't follow because that religion has the most influence in law making. Christians limit the freedom and equality of others based on what they believe. That, along with conversion attempts and insisting on Christian prayers in schools, is "shoving their religion down our throats".
