The Vulgate, which was the Latin edition of the Bible translated from Hebrew and Greek mainly by St. Jerome at the end of the 4th century; as revised in 1592 it was adopted as the official text for the Roman Catholic Church

Jerome in the 4th century. It is called the Vulgate. It was the "official" Roman Catholic version . . . most likely because Jerome's errors in translating the Greek into Latin, supported Roman Catholic doctrine such as the "Virgin Birth".

For years the Roman Church was wedded to the Vulgate well into the 20th Century. Meanwhile, understanding of ancient languages and archeological discoveries progressed under Protestant biblical scholars. Serious Roman Catholic biblical scholars were repressed by the Vatican who kept them busy finding and distorting Scripture to support Roman Catholic doctrine. This crap came to an end with the prophetic witness of Pope John XXIII and Vatican II. Now the Vulgate is largely relegated to an "interesting historical" document, but largely ineffective for serious biblical scholarship.
