Of course it contains shrimp feces. The so called "vein" is not a vein as shrimp have no veins since they have an open circulatory system. The "vein" is actually the digestive tract of the shrimp.

Shrimps are scavengers that feed on the sea/fresh water bottom. The vein contains all that staff, being digested. What comes out of the live shrimp are the feces.

the so called vein in shrimps,prawns etc,is virtually the gut & so it is the passage for waste products ,no dount about that,hence the stress on de-veining before cooking.

Yes, it's their intestinal tract. If you've ever deveined a shrimp and rubbed it between your fingers, it'll feel gritty. That's the sand they've ingested. Which is why we devein shrimp.
