drive a hybrid car, use only florescent light bulbs in my house, conserve water, recycle, reuse paper as scrap paper, sign many petitions regarding environmental issues, call my local politicians about local environmental issues, work as a wildlife biologist and work directly with endangered species. Also try not to buy overpackaged products, buy organic whenever possible, buy environmentally friendly products whenever possible.

Great stuff there… True about the electricity etc.
Look for people that abuse the environment and call the law.
If you see a vehicle that looks like a Smoke machine, GRAB THE TAG #. Many cities have web sites where you can turn in the offending polluter. If your city doesn’t have this, call them on it!
Look for people who clean paint or other chemicals in rainwater runoff areas. Local sewers go to lakes and streams. Also people use blowers or sweep grass or trash into sewers. EPA time, get a picture!
Your use of gasoline impacts the environment. But HOW can you make OTHER people not use gasoline?
Don't BUY as much. The USA has grown to be a nation of buyers. STOP buying things that you really don’t need. You DON'T need the newest TV, LCD, etc...
Buy QUALITY furniture. YES, It might be made of solid wood. But when it comes down to it. You will keep it 10x longer and maybe even recover it later.
Every day I see people buying cheap particleboard faced with fake plastic wood. How long will that last? Not as long as a good pine or hardwood desk. Yea it might take a tree to make it but it will last. Even if you buy a metal desk. It is for the better. Look at used furniture stores for Desks. With businesses closing every day, there is some high quality stuff out there that doesn’t need to be purchased BRAND NEW and you are recycling!
Computers. Here is a hard one. Spend $600.00 for a cheap computer or $1200.00 on a good high quality unit? Some of those $600.00 units will last 3 or 4 years, some even longer. BUT, what most people do is buy a cheap one and then buy a faster one a couple years later. Two computers in the time span that ONE could be used. Creating more WASTE.
My case for my computer is over 10 years old! Yea, I paid $100.00 just for the case. But it now houses a P4!!!
What if the computer breaks? I’ve seen people go out and buy a NEW computer just because they get a virus. WASTE!!!!!!!
What about planting a victory garden.. Yea, flowers are nice. But what about planting a few veggies? What about a fruit tree? When you plant a small garden look at the advantages? Your NOT buying cr@* produce from a grocery store that ships in products on a semi-truck. You get a little exercise. AND you help the environment by getting bees and butterflies to work in your area. Share your wares, neighbors might be friendlier if you gave them a couple of good tomatoes. You just might get a bag of green beans in return.
In the USA there are approximately 2 million semi trucks moving freight per day.. At about 16 miles to the gallon, that’s 32,000,000 gallons of diesel fuel being burned JUST in 16 miles.
Don’t buy wipes!!! Plastic containers, manufacturing that wastes electricity and resources just to manufacture something that a dishrag and a par of soap can clean.

Drive a 4 cylinder car and a motorcycle when weather permits. I try not to waste water and recycle the plastic bags from the grocery store. I also refuse to waste food and use diodegradable toilet paper and paper towels.

We replaced all of the bulbs in our house with energy-efficient bulbs. Not only do the bulbs last longer (thus less waste) but they have reduced our electrical costs as well.
Keep the cars well-maintained to improve gas mileage.
Recycle (it's a requirement in our town anyway)
Avoid using chemical pesticides on the lawn.
No styrofoam. It can't be recycled.
Reuse plastic bags to pack lunches or for storage.
Stopped writing paper checks. I handle everything electronically. I also get electronic statements where possible. (you'd be amazed at the amount of paper wasted my paper checks!)
No aerosols.

I never bought a motor vehicle - still go on foot at the age of 44 (not for environmental reasons though)
I quit smoking two months ago (health reasons)
Hey!! It's a contribution to the environment protection anyway.
ON A SERIOUS NOTE NOW: Two years ago, we established an environmental NGO (Non-Government Organization). We, meaning several engineers and I as a linguist.
Since then, we have been dealing with educational side of the problem: Educating the municipal authorities and the general public...

I participate in regular recycling of paper, plastic bottles and clothing. I take public transport and I don't use air-conditioning at home. I used to volunteer for a wetlands conservation programme.

I passed my draft thesis and a lot of my other papers for school in scratch paper. I ask the professor first if it's okay to pass in scratch paper, a lot of them even thought it was a good idea and encourage other students to do the same.
