My son is 16 years old. This morning he didn't want to get up and instead wanted to play hooky from school and begged me to let him stay home. I finally told him that if he stays home, he will have to cancel something that he had planned to do tonight that he's been looking forward to. He got mad and said I was "blackmailing" him but I told him I was just doing whatever necessary to get his *** out of bed. What do you think?

PS: Blackmail or not, it worked. He finally got up and went to school!

It looks like the users of Yahoo Answers are graced with the presence of another person who needs to hear how perfect they are. I guess doing your job as a parent isn't good enough for you; consequently, you feel the need to boast about what great control you have over your perfectly trained 16 year old. You know what? I have a little red ribbon in my pocket that reads, "Being a divorced fat ***, 300 dollars in the State Court, sitting around and eating bon bons while watching soaps all day, 10 dollars, bragging about what power and control I have over my kid due to the fact that my husband doesn't want my fat *** anymore, PRICELESS." By the way, spelling nazi, please feel free to find any grammar or spelling errors in my writing since you have such an obsession for perfection and order. You are the type of person who people avoid at all costs. Good luck raising your little asshole son.

Well done you!!! DONT let him think he can walk all over you. He needs to be responsible for what he does - you handled it well. He needs to go to school whether he likes it or not, and at least you are a decent parent who is trying to make sure he goes one way or the other!! Not blackmail at all - just a well worded threat!!!

Spot on!

Think of it this way:
If he had a job and decided not to go to work that day he would have consequences too. The first one being he wouldn't get paid for that day. Others might be his boss would give him less hours the next week or even fire him altogether.

No Blackmail is like when he smashes something in the house, and so you make him do extra chores in exchange for not telling his Dad who will beat him or something. Your situation was fair.

It's not blackmailing. If you were doing it for your own best interest then, it's blackmailing, but since it's for his best interest it's not.

You are being a responsible parent. I do it all the time with my kids. If they dont do what they are supposed to do, a privilege gets taken away.

Nope...not blackmail...it's having him take responsibility for his own actions. Big difference.
