just could mean that fertilization happened sooner or later; no one really knows what triggers mother nature ; look at the human population for verification of that fact; could be that your dog has matured; better Mom; more milk etc. ; generally, we are better parents with experience

It is not hard to judge day of conception if you breed responsibly. Matings should be supervised and witnessed.
As far as your question, your dog's first litter was just that, she was a first time mom, and maybe she herself wasn't physically ready.
Her second litter, she now knows how to take care of them, and she is physically more mature.
Gestation is (on average) 58-63 days, so a week difference from the time you marked on your calendar (which would be a guess if you didn't supervise the mating and write down the day they locked up), is no big deal.

sounds like the breeding days could be off. a litter of pups born a whole week early would rarely survive, let alone the whole litter. the average is 63 days, give or take a few days, but not a week. a day or so late, the litter will probably be fine, but you should be watching mom for signs of distress.

It is hard to judge the exact date of fertilization, therefore, due date will vary. The more experienced any mother is the better her litter. I do suggest you do not allow her to get pregnant every time she goes into heat. Vets suggest every other heat and spaying after 3 or 4 litters for the continued health of the animal.

It is difficult to say exactly when the fertilization occurred. However, it seems that larger size litters of pups mature faster than if the female only has a couple of puppies. I hope that this helps!

You can t necessarily know the exact date a dog should be whelping. depends on which day the eggs were fertilized. and what you say the puppies are doing is everything they should be doing at 5 weeks.
