......there will be certain people, usually at work, who will probably always be at least a little uncomfortable around me. I just left a job because I was being bullied. I have decided not to ever be bullied again, at all costs, even if I have to bully a (verified) bully back. It's my nature to be passive-aggressive. What can I expect from changing to an assertive-aggressive approach to people?

To those of you that thought I was talking about assaulting a bully....C'mon, I wouldn't be asking for advice about that. I mean returning unreasonable, nasty demands and comments with equal or greater nastiness.

Don't you any physical aggression against a bully. A bully mainly picks on other people to get you worked up and annoyed. If you show your annoyance by using your physical aggression when someone bullies you. You are basically giving them what they want. Keep calm and ignore them. I hate being ignored, so bullies who are annoying you to get aggressive attention as a responce from you are most certainly doing that.

Seriously, watch out.

Some workplaces are so hostile, when you react with assertiveness, and try to prove how they have been bullying you, it sometimes backfires, and you come off looking like the bully, to the point of getting fired.

These people are manipulators. And often, everyone else there is actively or passively afraid of them. If your boss is a bully, leave that job, and find a new one, it's not worth it.

Engaging in verbal sparring just increases the hostility in the workplace, for everyone else.

There's lots of good articles on this via google.

dear, dear, dear what a dilemma for you, sweetness. you should work to become a forest ranger in the great northwest of a beachcomber with one of those metal detectors on a coastal beach away from the crowds. you would probably qualify for a handicapped or a disabilty government stipend the trinkets you find on the beach should keep you well fed and a roof over your head. lol

There's no reason to be hateful. Just go do your job and leave personal business out of it. Let people know right away what's not acceptable behavior and be done with it.
