i would say South Beach is much better. Atkins restricts way too many things that are actually good for you. (ie. Fruit!) and it allows way too many things that are bad for your health. lots of red meat ..fatty things.
South beach is basically just a way of eating healthy. lots of fruits/veggies and good carbs. my mom started with SB diet and then ended on Weight watchers kinda. she lost 100 pounds!
good luck!

I have done the Atkins diet but not the South beach. I found Atkins to be very restricting. I would take a look at the 2 diets and pick which one lets you have the biggest variety of food. It's easier to stay on a diet when you have lots of choice.

HERE'S THE REAL DEAL:
Atkins works but it depetes your body of very important nutrients that you get from eating vegtables since they are so minimized.
South Beach is not good because it restricts natural fat which despite what people think IS NOT bad for you.
I would suggest reading the book REAL FOOD by Nina Planck. I did both South Beach and Atkins and wound up depressed since the diets are so limiting and unfulfilling.
The true way to manage your weight is to really understand what you are eating and what truly makes people fat (low fat foods, artificial sweetners, refined flour, refined sugar).
I really suggest that book, I think it will be the best over the long term. In the meantime if you want to kick start your weight loss try Atkins. However-make sure to drink A LOT of water and take a whole food daily vitamin or you will become constipated and depete your body of important vitamins.
Good luck

Neither for u as a consumer.
Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span. No food or drink in between the food and not more than three meals a day, unless u r diabetic.
