i'm working on a wind turbine, and we are coming up with design concepts, ie material to use and stuff like that..

what are you attempting to model?
wind drag on a car, plane, boat?
horizontal
other wise vertical is better, flowrate is more unified across flow area

Depends on what fluid you're going to use to drive the turbine (or what other driver you're going to use, if it comes to that).

For liquid fluids like water which require 'head' to develop pressure, the best arrangement would be a vertical turbine, to allow the liquid to utilize gravity.

For gaseuous fluids like steam, a horizontal turbine would probably be best, since it's somewhat easier to arrange the piping.

If you think you're going to need access to bearings and stuff, or are planning on tinkering with the turbine blade arrangement itself sometime in the future, a horizontal design is also better - basically, it's easier to get at the parts.

If you're using something other than a fluid to drive the turbine, you might find horizontal is better because most of the high-speed drivers (like electric machines) are primarily horizontal designs themselves.
