This is an issue here in Minneapolis at the airport, 75% of cab drivers here are Muslim. For me it's religion rearing it's ugly head, and they should loose their license if they refuse a fare.

They are refusing to pick up anyone carrying liquor, the tax free kind people get on vaction, because it is " a sin " to them, also blind people with a seeing eye dog are refused, it's against their religion. The airport authority has tried to negotiate with them, but with no success.

At first, that situation seemed so ludicrous, I thought you were joking. So I did a search and found the news articles. I still think it's ludicrous. I think those idiots need to get another job or move back to Somalia. This is America and people are allowed to carry wine and other alcoholic beverages as long as they are sealed. (That's the reason these jerks refuse people service.) According to the article, Muslim cab drivers in England and Australia are refusing service to people with service animals because dogs are "unclean." They need to do what the rest of us do and leave their religion at home and/or at the designated place of worship. Religion has absolutely NO place at a person's place of employment.
I mean, come on. My husband had to shave his beard to get a decent job--they wouldn't make a concession for his religion (which frowns on a man who shaves his beard). And since his religion is an unorganized, scattered minority with absolutely no political clout, he had to put its values by the wayside. If my husband has to shave his beard to keep his job, then these idiots need to admit people carrying alcohol and aided by service animals. As the article pointed out, who else will Muslim cabbies start refusing? Women who are not dressed up to their standards? Unmarried couples? Menstruating women? Where does it end?
Tolerance be darned! It just isn't working out and is only creating chaos. Too many people are taking advantage of it and denying others. Everyone just needs to accept (grudgingly) that the majority makes the rules. That's how it's always been and it works. Do I like it when my particular values are not respected by the majority? Of course not! But it keeps the peace and it works.

In a truly free society, a private business person should be free to refuse service to anyone for any reason. But in today's society many of our personal freedoms have been subjugated to the law and so a cab driver or someone in charge of hiring or someone who wants to rent out a room can no longer use their personal beliefs about what is right or wrong in another person's religion or sexual orientation as a basis in their decision making.
So I don't think that cab drivers who get their licenses under the umbrella of providing a public service should be able to refuse a fare for religious reasons. Being allowed to pick up fares from the airport is a choice spot for a cab driver and they are supposed to be facilitating the free flow of individuals and their possessions and not letting their religious beliefs interfere with that process.

If they are an independent cab driver and own the cab as well as the logo on the door and the light on top, then I think they should be allowed to pick and choose.
However, if you work for Yellow Cab Company or some other cab company, you must abide by their rules, and I'm pretty sure all they care about is whether the fare gets paid. If you don't like their rules, then you are free to work somewhere else.

Who are they refusing to pick up? Are they singling out people they think are of Jewish faith or some other faith. I'm wondering how they would know what faith a person is as they walk up to the cab. To answer the question, no, they have an obligation to take fares of anyone. They do have a right to not take a fare if the person is abusive, verbally offensive, and such. Riders, or fares, have a choice as well. They don't have to like the looks of the driver, and wave them by. Its their right.

A corporation constantly has each and every top to refuse provider to every person they chosen, as long as they do no longer make that determination based upon status as a member of a secure type (race, faith, shade, gender, and so on.). So a cab motive force (of any faith) has each and every top to refuse to %. up a passenger carrying an alcohol, as possession of alcohol is on no account secure. in addition, because of the fact the airport %.-up area is a privately held driveway, they have each and every top to refuse to permit cabs whose drivers refuse to %. up alcohol carrying passengers. The airport could be refusing provider, no longer based on the religion of the cab drivers, yet based upon their habit. observe that their habit isn't inherently religious in nature--working example, the airport might desire to no longer refuse to permit cab drivers wearing Muslim-mandated outfits interior the airport, because it particularly is an imperative area of the Muslim faith. And whilst it is an imperative area of the Muslim faith to no longer drink alcohol, a similar might desire to no longer be reported of doing corporation with people who do. Now, is it a solid public relatives coverage for the airport or the cab drivers to make those strikes? That i do no longer comprehend.

Considering that they have to be alone in a vehicle with a stranger behind them at the stranger's whim, I should say they should be within their rights to refuse a fare on any grounds they darn well please. But, they still want to make money, so I imagine those people who are going to make such refusals are few and far between. Please. Pharmacists can refuse to fill prescriptions on religious grounds- these are people lives!- cabbies are a dime a dozen. If one won't drive you, another will. It's just not that serious.

If they want to lose out on the fares of 90% of the population, I don't think they will be driving cabs for long.
They are perfectly willing to pick up non Muslims, just not drunks or dogs. So why not rephrase the question "should cab drivers be able to refuse drunk passengers or people with dogs?"
Get your facts straight.

Definitely not! Their job is to provide transportation. If they don't like doing that job then they should go into another field of employment.
If a cab driver senses danger from someone for a personal reason or feeling and his life is in peril, only then should he be allowed to refuse or bypass them.

Hi,
If thats true then I think they should lose their license! No one should be able to refuse a fair bcos of religious grounds!
Using religion either way is a pathetic thing to do and shows narrow mindedness...
i do have to say that its more to do with that particular group than to do with Islam.....its surprising how people bend the rules of a religion to suit themselves, their habits, and their prejudices!
Dont blame the religion blame the wierdo(s) individually!

I am not sure I understand what the problem is but nothing should be dealt with on the basis of the religious background! or any other background, only what is common sense, fair and logical in the situation is the issue.
