You get her on her own, and say, "Hey, I was thinking, ya know, if you wanted to of course, maybe we could hang out sometime."
Try that and then ask her out on a date if you both have fun. It's less stressful, and we almost always interpret the above as a date anyway.

hey man the best thing you must do is to be a good friend of her's and do lots of attention to her and show her that you really care for her. Dont ask her for a date if you are conscius of asking for it. Just tell her that you need companion and her presence is important..Or make a situation that caught her attention..

My experience is to go ahead tell her u want to see her at some place, do not waste time, take the plunge irrespective of consequences such as being turned down etc?

first of all, while just casually talking ask her for a coffee in canteen and then after cofee ask her for a date. i hope this to be simple !!
