Yes. I believe he got a raw deal when he was reinvented.
We know that in the Hebrew sacred texts, he was exactly that - a kind of spiritual quality-controller, testing man as part of the process of man's development towards a state of "betterness" in God's eyes. Both man and Lucifer were then said to be part of the system - part of God's plan.

It's only really when the early Christians came onto the scene that Lucifer became the ultimate bogeyman. He'd never had that much power before. But there was a fairly obvious need for a convincing answer to the question from would-be pagan converts:
"So...this Jesus fellow...you say he was the son of God, right? So...erm...where is he now? Ah. Crucified, you say. Well how did that happen if he's so powerful, eh?"

The answer of course was that "Satan tempted Judas, and Judas as a man betrayed the Lord, also a man, into the hands of death."

Bit thin on detail as explanations go, but useful - the only reason Christ didn't rule the world was because there was a force of ultimate evil in the world, who had undone him. Neat, eh? And then of course there was the fact that many of the pagans the new Christians were trying to convert did things they didn't like, and worshipped a whole range of gods. Pan, for instance - god of nature, viriility (and therefore sex). And also, possessor of a fine pair of cloven hooves, tail and horns. So Satan became The Big Kahuna in terms of evil because there was need of a scapegoat, and he got to look like he does in our popular mythology because he was associated with "bestial" things, and sadly, sex became viewed as the ultimate taboo because of the association between the imagery of the pagan religion and its new possessor, this Satan character.

Satan called Jehovah a liar when he told Eve she would not die if she disobeyed God's command not to eat from the forbidden fruit. By getting man to sin, he brought death on the human race. Jesus called Satan a manslayer and the father of the lie. His upcoming destruction is deserved.

He still is the accuser. But he had the highest position in Heaven, next to God, Himself, but the Devil wanted more. He will get what he deserves.
