Most definitely! Spin biking is a low impact exercise so your knees and hips will thank you for that. The only downside to spinning is that if you have not been on a bike in a while, your butt might hurt. This will go away after a while as you build up your glute muscles.

As with any exercise program, the only way to loose weight is to consume less calories than you exert. Exercising allows you to burn more calories, but you should also make sure you are eating healthy food. You do not want to starve yourself, but a change in eating habits might be in order. Check with a doctor if you are serious about a lifestyle change and he/she will be able to guide you in the right direction.

use your bike on a turbo trainer - this will fit you properly. I terms of fitness these are fantastic IF you structure your efforts - a heart rate monitor and cadence for pedal rate are essential. you need a 15min warm up and warm down and a very hard session of 30 mins in between, brining the heart rate up to lower level 2 ready for a big push is critical. For an investment of a modest amount you can really make a difference. Check the world champions that use a turbo to warm up - have read of Chris Boardman's book or the Lance Armstrong video where on a turbo he generates enough electric to light the building (ok I know its not real!). and have something to catch the sweat.

ANY exercise burns calories and therefore allows you to lose weight. Spinning concentrates on improving your cardio system, raising your VO2max and honing your technique to make you more efficient.

Good spinning classes/DVDs are not easy, and if you are not in decent shape to begin with you may have serious problems. Interval training is not for couch potatoes.

yes and yes.

be sure and take a class with an instructor, it's much more fun and a better workout than sweating alone
