She's using it for protection in case someone breaks into the house. I bet bet it could crack some bones well. I have a similar habit when my husband goes away on business trips.

your mum may keep this there for security incase someone was to break into the house. Its quite common for woman especially who are single or a lone parent to keep something like that for protection if she was ever in an uncomfortable situation. If its causing a problem then just go and buy yourself another bat.

smell the handle to see if it has a fishy smell?
