It's a decline in the production of melanin by the hair follicle. When this takes place has much to do with heredity, but if it happens early, this is not a sign of early aging.

Aging is a factor, but some people get grays fairly young. Other factors are stress and in women, hormonal changes. I'm sure there are more that I don't know about, too.

As we age, there is less pigment production and hair gets gray. Thank God for dye!!!

They lose their pigment from aging.
