Put as much beef as you want into a big pot
Add...
1 onion
2 stalks of spring onion
Thyme
Garlic
2 beef stock cubes
large slice of pumpkin (optional...but will thicken and add flavour)
Add enough water to cover plus an extra 3 cups to compensate for evaporation. Add more water later if needed.
boil on medium heat until beef is 3/4 done and pumpkin is soft
prepare the vegetables while beef is cooking
potatoes ...(cut 1 or 2 potatoes very small so they will mash down to make soup thick)
carrots
turnips etc. (Whatever you like)
Add these to the pot with salt and pepper to taste
Add some noodles and stir.
Continue cooking until meat is tender and all veges are cooked.
Pumpkin, some potatoes and the noodles should ensure that you get a thick and warming beef soup
Enjoy

Did you say heart warming? Aw, sweet. Here are the basics of Granny's recipe. Fry a whole pound of bacon (do what ever you want with it, for now you just need the grease). Put flour, onion salt, garlic powder, and pepper in a dish. Dip the pieces of stew meat in the flour, and fry them in the bacon grease until they are browned on all sides. Put this in a crock pot/slow cooker. Cut up at least a whole onion and a couple cups of celery, add it. Chop carrots too, and potatoes. Depending on the size of stew you make, adjust the amounts of onions and stuff and you can add anything you like, sometimes I put a can of corn but some people don't like that. Add several tablespoons of minced garlic, and salt & pepper and cover the ingredients with pleanty of water. Put on the lid and cook on low all day long, about 8 hours. I put a heavy towl over the crockpot lid to keep heat in. Check it and stirr everyso often, make sure it's doing ok. The whole house will smell wonderfull. A nice spice to add is marjoram, or recently I started adding green curry paste, which is awesome. Corn muffins go well too, I use jiffy and put a couple spoons of sugar in the batter. I sincerely hope you try it and that all hearts are warmed.

Chop your steak, stewing or braising steak, into rough pieces, not too small, coat with flour lighly and fry in a heavy based pan, if you've not got one just be steady with a frying pan. The idea is to brown the meat slightly. Put that into your stew pot, casserole dish or on a plate while you brown off some onions. Cut all your veg roughly the same size, potatoes, carrots, swede, if you like it, parsnips (larger pieces of these as they cook quicker), braise all of these in the pans for a few minuites to start to release the natural sugars. Then add all the ingredients to the cooking pot. Your heavy based pan will have lots of crusty brown bits in it, add a little water at first and heat it up, mixing in all these delicious flavours, you could also add a good slug of red wine, beer, guiness etc, to form a gravy. The flour from the meat will thicken it, but if you want to you can add a little, teaspoonful, of cornflower. Pour this over your veg and beef and mix in it. You can add herbs, a little salt, some black pepper. Just keep tasting it til its as you like. (even some chilli is good)
Replace everything in your heavy based pan and cook it on the top of the stove, slowly!! for at least 2 hours, longer if you can. Or in the oven, with a lid on, same sort of time. Enjoy, serve with dumplings!!!!

I just made a big pot of thick stew two days ago. I don't use a proper recipe, but I can tell you how I do it, and it works well for me. I use a crock pot. This allows the meat to cook on low all day and become fork tender. Use whatever type of beef you want. I used Angus beef stew chunks. To that I added one medium-sized can of diced tomatoes with the juice, about 2 -3 cups of beef stock (check the soup aisle). If they don't have beef stock, use beef broth. I added cut-up potatoes (large bite size pieces to keep them from falling apart), carrots, onions, celery. At this point, add whatever vegetables you like, including frozen or fresh mixed veggies, beans, peas, etc. Anything goes. Add seasoning to taste - I kept it simple at black pepper and salt - go easy on the salt because of the beef stock. Cook on low all day. To thicken at night if needed, mix a couple of tablespoons of flour in a coffee cup with ice cold water - get all the lumps out. Stir this into the crock pot and it will thicken instantly and no lumps will form. I serve this over crusty bread, rice, or noodles. I hope you enjoy it.

Ahem....
Cube beef, swede, potatoes, onions, parsnips, turnips and carrots into a pan.
Cover with water.
Bring to the boil.
Simmer until it forms a thick stewy substance. Takes about an hour and a half and requires much stirring.
Serve with lots of salt and pepper.
This is a really simple dish that is frequently overcomplicated, just bung all the stuff in a pan and keep an eye on it.

fry off some braising steak till brown, drain off then cook in water for an hr to 1&1/2 till meat is almost tender then drain off. then fry off some onions parsnips turnips swede carrots in fact any veg that you like till softened then add the meat and veg to a very large pot and add some well flavoured beef stock and cook for about and hr then add a packet of oxtail soup ( a satchet not tin) to the soup and continue cooking over a very low heat until thickened. I would also cook some diced potatoes with the veg as well if liked but definately do some dumplings with it. hope you try it and it turns out ok. good luck

I throw some barley and beef broth in a crock pot. I add some kind of beef to it (anything but hamburger - a lot of times I use leftovers). I spice it with salt, pepper, bay leaves, onions, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and sometimes Italian seasoning. Then I add whatever vegetables I'm in the mood for, usually carrots, celery, mushrooms, and potatoes. I cook it on slow while I'm at work and when I come home my house smells great and I have dinner!
If you use barley, be careful to make sure you have enough water in it, especially if you are not going to be in the house that day.

Buy some diced stewing steak, brown it in a little oil, cut up fresh vegetables e.g. potato, carrots, celery, leek, onions, parsnip, swede etc. (cut the potato into quite large chunck so that is doesn't go to mush)..Add vegetables to stewing steak, pour in a glass of red wine and then top up with water or stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 1 and a half hours or until beef is tender. Season with salt and plenty of pepper
