1. On arrival he would need to give his name; if his case is genuine, it would be in his interest to give his correct details. This name would then appear on his asylum ID card (ARC). If he was given papers, his solicitor should be able to have the papers issued in a name of his choosing, not sure about this, you need to get professional advice. I know that refugees have succeeded in having their name details changed, in the same way that a UK citizen can change their name.

2. His status in the UK should not be made known to any other party. Even if he is deported, he would not be identified as a failed asylum-seeker; however, foreign governments may draw their own conclusions from the circumstances.

3. Before being accepted as a refugee, he will have no passport, only the ARC mentioned in point 1. If he wins his case, he will be able to apply for a travel document, a special kind of passport for non-citizens. Many countries do not accept this as a valid passport, and you are not allowed to use it to return to the home country. It will not have "asylum" written on it, as there may be other categories if non-citizen residents that could have it. It will specify either limited or indefinite leave to remain in UK.

4. As an asylum-seeker, he will not normally be allowed to work or to attend free adult education, even for English. If he is accepted, he would have the same rights as a UK citizen.

Basically as an asylum seeker there isn't much a person can do. You are not allowed to work as an asylum seeker. You definately canot change a name whilst an asylum seeker.

The government will give an allowance which is very little indeed.

There will be no chance of gaining money by his own efforts until some status of residency has been given and this can take a couple of years. If the UK decide not to give him residency he will be deported back.

Life is not a bed of roses as an asylum seeker.

What i never understand is why he travelled through so many politically stable countries to get to the uk.

In geographical terms we should only really be accepting asylum seekers from Republic of Ireland and France. And there havn't been many of those for quite some time. Why do they come all the way from the other side of the world, im sure its nothing to do with our benefit system (sarcasm!)

He can't change his name unless he's been over here for 5 years, and he needs a passport for that, they should also delare their Asylum status, it's illegal if they don't declare it.

He won't be working legally as he is not allowed to work if he is an asylum seeker.

Asylum Seekers can do anything they want to as the government hasn't got the spine to kick them out or enforce the law on them as this would be an infringement of their Human Rights!!!!!!!!
