ALWAYS! If your own parents won't stick up for you, who will? Your kids are supposed to be the center of your universe and letting ANYONE talk smack about your kids just shows that you are not a caring and/or loving parent and should be punched in the face!!

I have a teen so I will take what you said in two ways. One...I believe that right is right and wrong is wrong. If you are messing up and disrespecting your parents and another family member tells you so then YES it is ok to tell you what you re doing wrong. Two....If a family member is just talking crap for no reason the parent should stand up for that child and say something. I would for my teen.

I think it depends on the situation. If your child talked crap first, acted disrespectfully, or somehow started the whole thing, then I think you need to talk to your child first and let them know that when they act a certain way to expect this reaction. HOWEVER, if it's completely unprovoked, then I would take the offender aside and tell them that you don't appreciate the manner and tone in which they were addressing your child, and if they have a problem, to figure out a way to say it constructively or you'll be stepping in. Your kids have got to learn how to deal in the world, they need to learn not everyone is nice, people aren't fair, and they need to learn how to stick up for themselves, so this might be a good opportunity for your child (depending on age) to learn how to defend him/herself while maintaining calm and reason.

Have you seen the film' Finding Nemo'? Where a father goes all across the ocean looking for his only son.
And now imagine, what would children think when they discover that their parent is thinking twice before standing up for them.
The first sense of worthiness that a child gets is from their parents, and yes they are worth fight for, and at least worth standing up for against the entire world. Here it is only the matter of standing up in front of some loudmouth family members.
You decide now.

There is a right time and a wrong time depending on the circumstance. I am there to defend and protect my child, but if they have done wrong and they knew it was wrong when they did it, then I will not uphold that wrong nor will I allow others to be the judge, jury and etc..~~~I would rather they say what is on their mind to the face rather than the back however. ~~~It boils down to this, the attitude of the person or persons finding fault. The approach can be effective or non-effective if you know what I mean. I do not uphold wrong. Right is right & wrong is wrong.

I do not tolerate no one, and I mean no one talking crap about my kids. I will get all up in that person's face and I will not back down from them. And I don't care who that person is, my kids come first.

yes they are. This responsibility firstly comes from the instinct of motherhood. This existence belongs to you, s/he is more important than everything and everybody.
Already, you have to care of your child from the birth, if you want him/her to be a good person forhimself, her parent and his nation. Actually I can't post well-formed answers; I am sorry for that.
