Nothing if you just go out and get the Job yourself, most places will teach you how when you get the job, and most likely to teach it better than a collage anyway if you think about it, Call it a job plus a degree at the same time. Bar tending is easy, its like any other job you get, takes a little while to master it but with time you'll get all. Why not make money learning instead of paying money to learn.

Do not go to bartending school. Everyone above is right - all you'll get is archaic knowledge, tips on flair - which no respectable bartender will ever do - and a bill for $500. The best way to get started is at a restaurant or, even better, a catering gig, because it's actual experience that exposes you to several types of serving environments and customers. Bartending school is kind of an industry joke - and don't fall for the job placement pitch - nightclub and pub owners hire and promote from within - the placement will be into a catering gig. You will have to work your way up from bouncer/doorguy to barback to bartender. These jobs are hard to get because they are high paying, cool, and somewhat easy - once people do get them, they don't let go. Jobs open because the girls get married or the guys can't control their drinking. Experience counts, but if you do go to school, do it for your own knowledge and then tell a prospective employer you have some basic experience in catering - telling them you went to school will set you back if not knock you out of the running altogether. I stress catering because it's kind of undefinable, whereas if you tell them you have actual bar experience when you don't - you will get busted within fifteen minutes - drink recipes don't count for anything - it's technique and knowing how to handle situations that arise that will get you caught in a lie. Oh, and your first day, when someone asks you if you know how to make a sloe gin fizz, punch them in the mouth.

We always said, "I would rather teach someone who knows nothing about bartending than to unlearn what someone else has told them." I would hire people with no experience just to be sure that they learned to work to my expectations, and not some kid who thinks they know a thing or two because they can make a harvey wallbanger and spin a frickin bottle. Don't go to bartending school. just go out there and find someone who will teach you on the job. If you want to practice at something work on holding interesting conversation while you do 5 other things.

I have to agree.
I am a bartender.
I took a bartending course but learned nothing.
I learned everything I know by making drinks and training at a few different bars.
Most bars and restaurants have certain ways of making drinks that you are going to have to learn.
For example, I learned in the course I took how to make a lemon drop martini, but at my job (Ruby Tuesday) we make them differently.
So - everything I learned in the course is invaluable now.
So - like she said, learn on the job! :)
Its the best and only way to learn.
GOOD LUCK!
