My husband and I had a carpet picnic last weekend.
I bought lots of yummy olives, sun-blush tomatoes, cheeses, pate, foccacia bread, salamis, houmous, and marinated anchovies. I put a blanket on the floor and laid all the bits out on a big platter.
It was fantastic and very intimate.

Pork loin. It is easy to prepare, has just the right amount of fat to make it tender is so tasty! Check out the internet for pork loin recipes or just ask the butcher at the store. If he loves meat, he probably also loves potatoes. Get some nice red potatoes, slice them up thin, put some butter and herbs on them and bake them in the oven. Yum, very nice. Make a nice salad to go with, using some more exotic greens than just plain iceberg lettuce. The main thing about a romantic dinner is that you put some time, effort and thought into it, so don't serve it at your regular dining table. What I have done is set up and push together four of the small what some people call tv tables or snack tables or whatever. I set them up in the living room in front of the fireplace. You could also do it outside on a porch or patio, whatever you prefer. Use a nice tablecloth, your best china and silver and crystal. Candles are a must. Linen napkins. Flowers are not a bad touch. Try to create the atmosphere of the best restaurant you can imagine without having to spend all the money. Above all, make it fun and out of the ordinary.

For starters
Oysters on the half shell with a spicy sauce
serve with Champagne as it will make it feel like a really special occassion and get things going in the right direction.
Next
Steamed artichokes with vinagrette dipping sauce. They require time to eat, so you two can enjoy each others company. A nice sauvignon blanc would be appropriate with this course.
For the main course
Nothing beats a simply grilled steak. Get a large porterhouse that the two of you can share. While you are grilling the steak, have some skewered mushrooms, small sweet onions, and mixed bell pepper chunks grilling also. Make sure to brush them with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt to bring out the flavor. Serve with a nice merlot.
For dessert
Chocolate, of course. A chocolate fondue with fresh cut fruit is a nice, fun, relaxing way to wrap up a meal. You can dip fruit and feed it to each other. Serve with a nice late harvest cabernet or a port.
By having food that takes a while to eat, and keeping things simple, both of you will get maximum time to enjoy each others company. I wish you good luck.

BEEF AND POTATO STEW
1 lb. beef rib-eyes cubed
4 peeled/diced potatoes
1/2 red onion large dice
8 oz halved fresh mushrooms
1/2 pound fresh asparagus (ends discarded-stalks cut in thirds)
1 can beef broth
1 cup Merlot or Cabernet
1/2 cup water
1 clove garlic
salt, pepper, red pepper and crushed rosemary to taste
Place all ingredients into a crockpot and cook on high about 4-5 hours. Then mix about 1/4 cup of flour with 1/4 cup cold water, mix well and add to stew (this will thicken the sauce). Let cook and thicken about 20 minutes. Serve with cornbread and salad.

Get some thick pork loin chops. Slice down the middle of the thickness but not all the way thru. Get a box of stovetop stuffing. Make it like you would according to the directions. Take the stuffing and stuff the pork chops. Cook in oven until just about done.
Make mashed potatoes. That needs no instruction. Get a jar of gravy. Heat that up. Make up another veggie --- corn, beans, whatever. Serve meat, potatoes, gravy and veggie. For dessert, have chocolate mousse --- take a small box of INSTANT pudding mix (chocolate, of course) and make that according to box instructions. Take thawed Cool Whip and whip it into the pudding to make a light, fluffy mousse. Serve in a wine goblet. Garnish with fresh berries --- just a couple.
Add candlelight and soft music.

Preparing Cornish Hens are always pretty. And it looks so "fancy". I did that for my guy and he was greatly impressed! You can get them at almost any grocer, and they're not SUPER expensive. I seasoned mine with some light salt/pepper/rosemary and a touch of paprika just to add extra color. I served that w/a twice baked potatoe (just bake, carefully scoop out the insides leaving the skin-boat, season w/your favorite flavors, refill the skins and bake in the oven until the potato has set and turned lightly brown on top, top w/your topping of choice-or leave plain and sprinkle parsley or chives for color.)Some FRESH steamed broccoli, green beans, asparagus...something green for color. Paired w/a nice rich "sultry" chocolate mousse dessert and a nice dinner wine....OOhh-lah-lah!
OH-almost forgot! I did fondue one year for Valentines Day...he REALLY liked that! I did a "surf and turf" style fondue dinner. I marinated and grilled some bite size steak bites, had steamed shrimp (already peeled) and prepared a lobster tail, then removed from shell and cut into bite size pieces..also had some steamed broccoli...the cheese fondue recipe you can find easily on line--there are SOOOO many! I actually forget which one I used as it was a few years ago.
But I also had a chocolate fondue (luckily I have 2 small fondue pots! I got both during the same Christmas one year!) So I had that w/strawberries, cherries, and chunks of sponge cake. Also served both with a nicely paired wine....
It was VERY romantic over candlelight....you have to sit close to both be able to dip from the fondue. Plus everything is already prepared in smaller bite size pieces, not messing around w/having to cut/tear your food apart in front of one another-LOL! It's a very "cozy" way to have a nice fullfilling dinner!

Make a cordon bleu chicken, but instead of using traditional ham and cheese, you could use pancetta with spinach (as you dont like melted cheese) Or some cheese inside such as grated parmesian, or asiago. Brown the chicken in the oven after rolling it up with the pancetta and sprinkle italian herbs on it. Grill portobello mushroom on a foreman grill with olive oil. Make a risotto (many grocers carry easy to make risotta mixes from a box) Plate your dish with risotto first, grilled portobello next, cordon bleu third and drizzle with olive oil and white wine mixture with garlic.

Spicy Pork Pilaff:
Ingredients:
1 lb diced Pork
1 large Onion (sliced NOT diced)
2 oz Butter (not oil or hydrogenated fats)
8 oz Long grain Rice
Frozen Mixed veg (defrosted)
1 & 1/4 Pts chicken stock
Curry powder
ground Garam Masala
ground Cumin
3 Tbls Soy Sauce.
Method:
Melt butter in large frying pan/Wok. place onion and pork into pan and fry until pork lightly browned. Strain off pork and onions with slotted spoon into casserole dish or (better) Slow Cooker leaving as much butter in pan as possible. Pour rice onto butter and stir until rice has absorbed butter. Pour stock, Soy sauce onto rice and then add spices - bring to boil. Pour over Pork and onions in casserole dish. Place casserole dish in heated oven and cook for 1 - 2 hours at 180 - 200oC (or until rice has absorbed all liquid) add defrosted frozen veg and return casserole to oven and cook for further 30 mins.
Voila!!! - Spicy Pork Pilaff - Bon Appetite !!!!

Roast beef, make sure you make Yorkshire pudding as well.
Its pretty easy to cook and very nice.
Serve with a nice wine and presto, romantic as you like.
