Up to 46" lcd are far better. Above this some people say plasma have a very slight edge. If you intend gaming on it avoid plasma. The best on the market at present is the Sony Bravia range.

Plasma TVs have millions of tiny bubbles containing a gas like substance, and when an electric current passes through these bubbles, the bubbles glow & dim to give a rich vivid image on the screen. LCDs have Liquid crystals through which the electric current passes . The crystals interpret the signal to determine whether or not to allow light through them to make an image on the screen.A fluorescent tube in behind illumintes the image. This technology uses less power to operate. In the plasma, it takes loads of electrodes to activate the phosphorous.

We purchased a 42" Plasma on 3rd Jan from Dixons (£800 with free delivery and free £200 glass and alloy stand) and its superb... We wondered which would be better, plasma or LCD and plumped for the plasma... Does produce a lot of heat though!

Plasmas consist of gas trapped between sheets of glass that is transformed when an electrical current is applied.
It offers rich color, but the glare is bad if in a bright room.
LCD is like a flat computer monitor -- its pretty versatile, but viewing from angles causes some issues
