My cousin-in-law's wedding is coming up and as the best man I am expected to provide for certain arrangements at the reception. One thing that puzzles me is spittoons.

Most of the bride and groom's guests are from Arkansas, and as such there will be a large percentage of tobacco chewers and snuff dippers.

Many brass spittoons were converted for scrap during WWII, so acquiring them is not as easy as you might expect. Can spittoons made from other materials be substituted for formal occasions?

Also, should there be seperate spittoons for the gentlemen and womenfolk, or is that an anachronism in the modern era?

Let me just say one thing . . . please do not encourage spitting at a wedding by providing a spitting recepticale. Being from Arkansas hopefully does not automatically mean void of proper etiquette. I would not be providing anything for someone to spit in anywhere, especially a woman. But now that I have climbed down off my soapbox; yes, spittoons can be made from other materials. Two websites listed below offer some alternatives for you . . .

Wow. All these stories make me glad I don't go out to state parks too often! When I trail ride it's mostly on the trails owned by my riding instructor. The worst thing we see there are snowmobiles in a neighboring field in the winter, and the neighbor walking his dogs (who are very well behaved and don't even look at the horses). My instructor's dogs often follow us on the trails and sometimes the horses spook at them, but usually they are fine. The couple of times I have gone out to state parks, I found that the bikers were the biggest problem. They didn't seem to realize that some horses look at the bike and think 'horse-eating-monster' and freak out - and they would just ride by and not do anything when the horse rears or bucks or takes off, etc. The parks around here don't allow motorized vehicles on the trails and all dogs must be on leashes (there are mounted patrols walking around on all the trails). The only time I've ever witnessed an ''accident'' (since I've never been bucked, etc. at a state park) was when my aunt and grandma's horses spooked because of a racoon. lol. They both fell off. The horses ran. They limped to catch them while we walked behind and laughed. =] (They were okay!) By the way, me and my cousin were walking my aunt's dogs behind the horses.

It's a shame that there can't be a wedding without someone having to chew. It's one of the nastiest things that I can think of. If I were the bride (unless I was a chewer) I wouldn't want people spitting all over the place. I haven't seen anyone chewing tobacco in years. And then it was just one person.

I'd just put me a big old bucket in the middle of the room. One for all and all for one. You being best man and all, tell the groom he can give his bride a right nice present by telling her in front of everyone: Roses are red, violets are blue. You're a wonderful wife and a great sister too.

Wow - learn something new every day. I'd consult the bride and groom, and yes, I'd say that other materials should be fine.

Is this a real question? Who chews tobacco anymore except baseball players? Gross.

go for the white foam cups, you can keep them forever as they are not biodegradable.
