There is a better question that I think that you have failed to ask but perhaps should be.. It is obvious that you do not believe the bible at all.... So why are you so concerned about it.. Did you know there are people in Africa that believe they have to make incisions in there skin so that there children will be healthy when they are born... There are many people that practice things much more absurd than Christianity... If Christianity is so absurd, what is your fascination with it.. Where does your bitterness stem from?? Also, if you dont believe in hell, then why ask a question concerning something you believe is a myth.. Either you are the most loving compassionate person who is absolutely concernced with our "naivity" In that case.... I am touched by your concern for me.... Please keep posting on these sites and keep trying to show "Us Christians" that we are misguided... Your concern is touching... I just want to ask you one thing.. Are you happy? do you have peace and contentment.... I can promise you that you do not.. You are miserable.. Your hurt stems from your misery... Hope things work out for ya.. Good luck with the your "mission to enlighten christians"

These words were used my the apostle Paul to empasize the need to not use any part of the body to sin. He also say's this with the clear understanding that Christians new that they were forgiven as Jesus had paid for our sins when he died on the cross. Paul was so interested in making the people from the new churches understand that we need to stay away from sin that he used the greatest illustration he could think of to impress on them the importance of not sinning and if they did to go to Jesus and repent.

This passage is rhetorical. It simply means that whatever you have that is keeping you from living up to the standards set before us in scripture then we are to cut whatever that is out of our lives. To cut out our eye simply means that what ever we lust after with our eyes needs to be stopped. If you are one to look at porn but call yourself a christian, then get rid of the internet or the tv that is enabling you to view the porn. If you steal then cut off the opportunity to steal by staying away from certain places or putting yourself in a situation where stealing is what you think is the answer.
So the cutting off of the eye or arm is simply a metaphor for cuttin things out of your life that keep you from God.
I hope I explained it clear enough.
Matt

Okay, first of all, the bible calls homosexuality an abomination, there isn't much room for differing interpretations there. Abominations are bad and always have been bad. Now, This Phelps guy and his followers are a bunch of *******, and if I see him or his supporters I will start the beatings. Yes, it is a sin, but God also says to love the sinner but hate the sin. Phelps spews hate, and has no love for anyone but himself and the money he collects from his bigot brothers.

It can be seen both ways. Related to your body, if your arm always does sinful things and it just wont change, even if you pray to god for forgiveness and change of it, and you think, you will go down going down with that behavior, cut it off!
Also related to other human beings, if you have friends that never want to receive gods mercy and they try to make you do sins also and you cant change them, get loose of them also. Thats what it means.

If you were to take the above passages literally, you wouldn't make it through the morning. Jesus is simply explaining how serious sin is.
If He had wanted us all to amputate parts of our bodies everytime we sin, the 12 disciples would have never gotten through the first week of His ministry, let alone 3 years.

This is allegorical. If there is something that is a stumblingblock to you that is preventing your doing good and being worthy of salvation, you are supposed to lose it. Jesus did this many times to make people think and to reinforce a teaching.

he doesnt mean it litrally its symbolism for example if if sum 1 causes you to sin than get them out of your lives your better off with 1 less frend/family member etc.. than to burn in hell
it might hurt to get rid of them for example if its a family member that causes you to sinn but you are better off :P
and im glad your reading the bible good on ya hahahahaha!!!!
