Looking at everyone elses answers, I'm so glad I'm still quite young and don't have to pay for the bigger things in life. The most expensive thing I ever bought, with pure cash, was my dictophone, £69.99. And it works just as well as I'd hoped it would.

If you can pay in cash, you can pay with a card and immediately pay off the entirety of the charge. Using a credit card has certain advantages including (but not limited to): merchant dispute resolution, extended warranty coverage, rewards programs, additional services like extra insurance (particularly for rental cars), frequent flyer miles, etc. If you want to pay cash for a big ticket item, it should be something where the seller doesn't accept credit cards, like for automobiles or real estate. That's when paying cash makes a big deal. Something like half of all American households have zero credit card debt so it's not "everyone" who is in the hole. It's really just a subset of the population who are irresponsible with their money. There's nothing inherently wrong or evil with credit cards. They are financial instruments that can be used wisely or stupidly depending on the discipline of the cardholder.

my car $27,637 I saved for 3 years for my new 2007 Ford mustang GT. I saw it at a car show in Houston back in '03 and I knew I had to have it. at the end of October '06 I went to Plaza Ford in Fallston, Md, talked to a salesman, got the price right and went to the bank for a casheirs check.
