The word "Pope" comes from the Greek (pappas) and it means (father). Hence we call many of today's catholic priests as "father".

He is also referred to as His Holiness, The Pope. He is also the spiritual leader of the Vatican City. Most catholics around the world consider the pope to be a righteous successor of Chirst's apostle, Peter or Saint Peter. Saint Peter was the first bishop of Rome and the first pope.

God Bless You

derived from: papa=Papa/father; from Greek= pappas. The pope is claimed to be god's representative on earth. however as a christian I do not take this. I believe that they should only assist and give opinions in interpretation of scripture rather than decree his understanding the right one. He is also said to be the successor of saint peter

(Ecclesiastical Latin papa from Greek papas, a variant of pappas father, in classical Latin pappas -- Juvenal, "Satires" 6:633).

The title pope, once used with far greater latitude, is at present employed solely to denote the Bishop of Rome, who, in virtue of his position as successor of St. Peter, is the chief pastor of the whole Church, the Vicar of Christ upon earth.
