I was trying to find the answer in Consumer Reports in one of their recent camera evaluations but they didn't explain it

Single lens reflex.

Generally speaking, a SLR (or dSLR, the digital version) is a camera that allows the photographer to see the subject through the same lens that brings the image to the film (or sensor)

Usually bulkier than a point & shoot, with the ability to interchange lenses.
