They are Newfies, played by 2 Newfies actually. However, they were not very good examples of the breed.
And actually, redhen, Newfs come in black, the white with black, or Landseer, but also come in grey and brown. The grey and brown are lesseer favored colors, but are fairly common.
I have had and bred Newfs for many years and they are a wonderful breed for those who are suited for them.
And I do disagree about shaving the poor dog in the summer!!!! Why do people get a double coated dog just to shave it. They coat adds insulation in ALL climates and shaving removes that protection. There are Newfs in Hawaii, and they do not shave theirs. It is a bad idea. It also removes the natural protection from sun and insects.
Jeeze people...it is NOT a Lab!!!!!

It's definitely a newfoundland. They are wonderful dogs for pets. They are also working dogs and can be trained for water-rescue. Which is why it was funny for the dog in the movie to be afraid of water!
I have one, but not the black breed. MIne's white with black patches. He's a darling. They grow to be HUGE, but are usually extremely gentle.

It is, in fact, a Newfoundland. I own one and it is the best dog I have ever had. They generally do not need to be trained in water rescue, as this comes quite instinctively to them. They are huge, and prefer to be indoors at night - i.e. with their humans - regardless of weather. They are very gentle, but they are HUGE, so even a misstep can result in an "ouch" for a little kid. They are extremely easy to house train, and once done will never disgrace themselves in the house. They do tend to drool, some more than others, and of course they shed. They are not barkers - if they are barking, go and check it out, they are trying to tell you something. (It may be something stupid, like, the neighbors dog is taunting me, or there is a squirrel eating from the bird feeder....) Some will disagree, but we shave ours in the Summer - he loves it, and still maintains his waterproof "undercoat". (Then he looks like an over-stuffed lab!). There is one variation on the color and that is the black and whites, but these are called "Landseers". These dogs are usually somewhat pricey, but contrary to what they look like, they will not eat you out of house and home, and require just normal amounts of dog food. Yeah....they WILL eat as much as you give them...but not being terribly active dogs, they will be fine on a normal diet. Given their size, sadly, they are not long for this earth, but this is true of most giant breeds. You will treasure every day with them.

It is a newfoundland dog. They are beautiful dogs. When they are fully grown they can grow to the size of a calf. They have webbed paws, have a water-resistant coat and they are used quite a lot in lifesaving and lifeguarding. They are know to have a very good temprament and be very loyal to their family.
