when they're referring to "atheists"? Is dropping the plural "s" a weird quirk of American English?

All Americans are weird. We are the weirdest country on the planet. We have the best constitution that we ignore, the greatest wealth that we squander, and the most beautiful landscapes that we populate with advertisement billboards.

Then we have all our weird religious nuts.

No, it's not a common use in American English. When I see it, I usually assume typos or non-native speakers of English.

No, it's a sign that they spent too much time in church and not enough time in school learning how to spell.
