Hi Grace p!!
If your dog is limping, there is definitely a problem.
A close examination may turn up an issue you can deal with immediately, or it may turn up nothing.

Examining your dog may be a two-person job if your dog is trying to get away. You’ll want to prevent too much squirming so you can take a good look.

* Closely examine the pad and paw, especially if your dog is walking on three legs and keeping one off the ground.
* Also check the entire leg and joints for swelling, tenderness, burns, cuts or dislocations.
* If your dog is constantly chewing an area, there may be a foreign object like a burr attached. Look for these external irritants.

What to Do;

* If you find a cut, burn, swelling, tenderness, dislocation, break or other serious problem, contact your veterinarian immediately for treatment.
* If you find an easily removed irritant, like a burr or something in the fur, remove it carefully.
* For more serious irritants like glass or thorns, you should see your veterinarian to rule out an infection.
* The pads are durable but not indestructible. Fertilizer and sand can cause problems.
* Keep the pads clean and nails and fur between the toes trimmed to reduce the risk of some foot problems.
* If the pads are cracked, use a moisturizer to soothe them and consider an antibiotic cream to help them heal. Boots may be necessary for a few days of protection.
* If you can’t find any visible problem, see your veterinarian. Some problems will only be found by a professional.

If he was limping then you need to check out the paw of the leg he was limping on. He could have stepped on something & cut it or he could have it still in there. Anyway, get him on his side & take a good look at all the pads on that foot. Make sure theirs nothing in his pads. Also run some water over the pad so you can get all the dirt & dust off so you can see better. Be sure to check his dewclaw too. It is the one nail that's up a little higher on his paw. Sometime too dogs ,if their nails aren't clipped have the nail grown all the way around & back into the pad. If this has happened then cut it in the middle & pull the claw out of the pad with tweezers. If there is a cut or any open sore or spot treat it just like you would as human cut. Put hydrogen proxide on it to boil out the cut & then dry it & apply a triple antibodic cream. Your parents should have something like that in their med. cabinet. Also check his leg if you don't see anything on the pads. A good thing to do to know where it's coming from is push all over with slight pressure until you get to the place where he's hurt. He'll jump a little or try & pull his leg away when you get to the hurt spot. It could be a spider bite too. With this tho there is always swealing. If it is an insect bite then you need to push all of the posion out of it that you can. He won't die form this but it will make him sick & listless. So be sure & also give him plenty of water to drink & sometimes a baby asprin will make him feel better, especially if he's got a fever.
Good luck.....................Blues

If it were my dog I'd go galloping of to the vet in a second because I'm a complete worrywort when it comes to my dog. He probably twisted or sprained his ankle. See, how your dog is over the next few days and if he's not improving or is even getting worse after 2-3 days go to the vet. It shouldn't be anything huge.

Hey! I don't know if in your area they have a local vet who works with rescue animals but I would suggest looking into it, where I live it is less expensive but try to come up with the money to take him to a vet if it lasts much longer. In my opion, my dog is like a child to me and worth me finding the money to get him looked at if he is hurt or sick. I hope that your pup is fine, but you never know and better safe then sorry. Also if it's hott, make sure he has lots of fresh water, a cool place to hang out and good luck with him - hope he is okay!

Well of course you would need to take him to the vet... outside of that, check the dog's injury daily (does it try to put more weight on it as time passes), check energy level daily. From my entirely unscientific experience with my dogs I found that they can heal many things over time, it's just a matter of how good they heal that's a question...try to limit movement of your dog (no strenuous or over active movement) but not entirely... some movement I think is good for healing... but above all at least see a vet once for a diagnosis

look, I just need to warn you. NEVER GIVE YOUR E-MAIL ADRESS OUT ON THE INTERNET!!! It's really dangerous, you get all kinds of weird stalker people after you. You have to look carefully at his paw and try to see if what's wrong. If you can't see any otward wounds, bites ect, something's really wrong. Try and contact a shelter of somewhere to take him too if you don't have money, there are always some free vets somewhere.
Good luck

Next time leave him in a cool area of the house he is very young to be outside on his own., Ring the vet to ask for advice ,is he insured,? ask another adult that you trust to help you make a decision, he may just have fallen but it could be a green stick fracture,so he really needs to go ,ask another member of the family,to help.Advice from a vet is free.Do you have a local animal welfare center? He may just have bruised it ,is he yelping in pain? Why did you leave him outside on such a hot day he is possibly de-hydrated because of the heat.

Just check his paws to see if he's stood on anything. It could be as simple as that. My dog start limping and I found blood, a piece of plastic had gotten stuck in his paw. I just soaked his paw and took it out, then gave him lots of water. You said that it was really hot, thats probably why he wasn't energetic, he was just too hot.
