Napoleon's hero was Alexander the Great. He dreamed of founding a great empire of conquest in the East like Alexander.
When the British destroyed his fleet at Aboukir (the Battle of the Nile) his dream effectively died with his fleet.. He may have momentarily converted (or wanted to appear to convert), but this is subject to dispute. No sharia law was implemented by him. He packed his bags and fled back to France, and that is where the whole episode ended. He was in fact later crowned Emperor of the French in the presence and with the blessing of the Pope. In fact, his rule restored the Catholic clergy to important privileges that were taken from them during the revolution. He negotiated a Concordat with the Vatican in 1801.

That sounds a little racist to me.
He may have had good things to say about Islam but he wasn't a Muslim, nor would sharia law be much worse on the tyranny he inflicted upon Europe as emperor.

He didn't convert to Islam, but he held his hand out and met them half-way when in the Middle East. He tried to get the religious leaders on his side to make it easier to occupy the area.
