fear of change perhaps....
The more the fruits of knowledge become accessible to men, the more widespread is the decline of religious belief.

Oh, it's not usually a personal thing. The majority of atheists are good people, with morals and values and a positive attitude. However, there are a few that spoil it for the rest, for example, criticizing believing people or their religions to the point of offense, or trying to live their life opposing the values of religion just to prove a point, despite the fact that they are also generally the values of society as a whole.
The same way, a lot of people are showing hatred towards Muslims at the moment. Is this because Muslims are bad people? No. It's because a few Muslims (NOT the majority) carried out terrorist acts, so people assume that all Muslims will.
It's silly really.

If you ask me, it's really pathetic. People have no excuse to hate each other.
You use the broad term "religious people," but I notice mainly professing Christians acting in this way. Not only is it hurtful to atheists and others, but it makes Christianity look bad. A belief system primarily based on love should not be burdened by intolerance or ignorance, not to mention outright hatred. A Christian's mission is not to beat people over the head with religion, nor is it to speak of love and show hatred. This is a lesson that I learned and that I continue to learn today.
I apologize on behalf of anyone who may have hurt you or anyone else in this way... I am not perfect, nor can I forgive sin, but I can at least apologize.
God bless.

C'mon Dellow, don't sling the H-word around like that. No-one's persecuting us here. People who perceive hate in every response they face look a bit insecure and needy. I couldn't care less if someone hates me. I just don't want them to have the means to follow up that hate with something I WILL care about.
And generally, religious people don't hate atheists. They're a bit patronizing sometimes, as the posts here show. Forgive them, they know not what they do. Those that do hate, ignore them. If they come at you with a knife, kill them.

not that they hate, they want them to see the same light/truth that they have found. share the wealth if you will.
but like handing a gift to someone and having them reject it, the religious person takes it as a personal attack since it was a gift from the heart. so in turn starts the war and debates.
personally....I use to be an atheist and when someone mentioned religion to me I would just state "thanks, I already have a church" and nothing more would be said. so why can't others just say something polite. why go into name calling, bashing and all the hate. do we do the same thing if you like the blue car and I like the red car? do we do it if I drink chocolate milk and you drink organic vitamin D?

I don't think it's hate. I think sometimes it's misunderstanding of the atheist philosophy. And some times it's frustration. It's frustrating for everybody when others just don't believe what we do, even if we are positive our way is right. It's ethnocentrism. Do some of them hate atheists? Sure! But, personally, I think they view atheists the same as they view any other religion - A person with different beliefs. That's it. It's hard to know someone enough to hate them, if all you know is their religion.

Religious people don't hate Atheist/s. It's just perplexing to think that some people don't believe in God, when they themselves exist as created beings mingling with believers. There are creatures around us, coz there's a Creator...and this Creator is God.

Animals are afraid of strangers. They feel threatened so they resort to aggression. Have you ever went up to a rattlesnake and it started coddling you? It's all a defense mechanism. Even some atheists hate religious people just as much. Instinct undermines intelligence.

I have NO idea.
It doesn't affect my beliefs any to have others not agree with me.
OK, once again, here's my message to atheists:
I actually don't care a whit if you respect my beliefs or not. I'm not interested in converting you, or even in having you show curiosity about my religion.
I'm perfectly content to leave you alone in that area of your life, and to have you leave me alone in that area of mine. I am more than willing, I'm happy to work with you on common goals, and to respect that you come to those causes from a different perspective. I won't tell you that your motivations are wrong because they are not the same as mine.
And I don't think less of you for your unbelief.
I'd prefer, though, that when I am speaking with other Pagans about Paganism, you don't butt in on the conversation to tell us that we're delusional. I won't horn in on your conversations with other atheists to tell you you're wrong for not believing.
