If I am watching a Fully HD show (say BluRay, HD-DVD or HD Broadcast) with 720p or 1080i on a 42" LCD, will the picture be SIGNIFICANTLY better than watching a DVD on a 21" LCD via component output with 480p. Let's assume that both LCDs are exactly the same, such as contrast ratio, aspect, etc except the size. What I want to undestand is that will investment for HD for a smaller TVs worth the price or HD broadcasts cater really for big screen TVs. Thank you.

I find , in general that smaller TVs like 21" LCD give a good resolution, just because of the screen size. I think a digital signal on one that small would be good. But, if you are going with big-screen, HD will give the best resolution. On the big screen, without the HD signal, the picture tends to be grainy, unless you get a Sony big screen LCD with the
Grand Wega Engine technology, which is an interface to give good resolution whether the signal is Digital or HD.

Yes, the 42" will look better but how much better depends on you. Each person has his own taste when it comes to picture quality. In my opinion, an HDTV is only worth it if you intend to get a 32" or larger TV. The bigger the screen the better the resolution looks. Anything smaller than 32" I don't believe it's worth the extra cost for HD.

You will still notice it. 1080 has about twice the resolution of a 480 SDTV.

But for the price of an HDTV, I would avoid getting one unless you get a big screen. That way, you can more enjoy the watching experience since it is more submersive.
