I wormed my cat with drops that were applied to the back of his neck. It was a brand that I have never used before.
About 5 minutes after it was applied he started frothing at the mouth and ran to go outside. I let him out, but kept an eye on him.
Approx 10 minutes later I checked on him and he was fine and was not frothing anymore.
I brought him in and gave him some treats as I thought maybe he might have reacted to the taste of it.
What could have caused him to do this?

The drops were NOT given orally. Also, the packet stated that it was for worms.

It's quite possible that your cat had a spontaneous reaction to the worming and this was his way of getting rid of the taste.
It could also have been that he was quite infected with worms and the drops were very quick acting and a worm was brought up this way or the drops were too strong for him.
Either way, I would recomment NOT using these drops in future. If you had been using drops before this one and didn't have any bad reactions, I would go back to using what you know is safest for him.

the stuff you put on the back of the neck is for fleas, NOT worms. Yes, the ingestion of a flea can cause tapeworms, but the flea medicine will only get rid of the fleas, not the worms. If your cat has worms you need to see the vet for an oral medication or an injection. How would applying something on the skin eliminate a parasite in the cats gut??

Ok first off you said you applied wormer to the back of his neck? If this is the case he probably scratched himself with his back foot when you put it on and then he licked it off his foot. Or sometimes cats can reach back there to lick it off if you didnt put it high enough.
People tend to apply stuff to the back of a cats neck all at one time or in one spot which in case will run down the side and give the cat a chance to lick it.
That would cause the frothing at the mouth due to a taste he doesnt prefer. Is normal. Some cats have different taste buds like humans do.
He should be fine.

Please don't use OTC drops or pills to worm your cat or treat it for fleas.
First of all they don't work very well, if at all and secondly it's been well reported that they can even be toxic to some cats resulting in death.
If your cat has worms the best and ONLY thing you should do is take him to the Vet.
The Vet will be able to tell you what kind of worms they are, and give you pills in the right dosage for the age and weight of your cat.
It's sound like your cat had some sort of reaction to the medication that you used.
Whether you got it OTC or you got it from the Vet, to be on the safe side please call your Vet and tell him what happend so that he can decide if the cat needs to be seen.
Good Luck

A lot of these meds can cause a cat to froth... you are essentially poisoning the cat in small increments to kill the worms... however, I reccomend that if it does not clear up, to go to your vet for the pills next time. They are easier to give, cause less distress to kitty and work much better. Good luck.

Why would you worm your cat with drops that were applied to the back of his neck? What was the name of the dewormer? What kind of worms did he have? If it were for tapeworms, you should have gotten Droncet from the veterinarian.
I am hoping that you did not orally give him Frontline which is for fleas that can cause tapeworm if the flea is ingested. Frontline is only to be used on their skin to kill the fleas and their eggs.

The most likely answer is that he managed to leak himself somehow and that is what caused the reaction. He must not leak the liquid before it is completely dry, I know you were careful but cats are very agile and he probably managed to.
