If your dog is on heartworm prevention each month, he/she is already receiving a dose of dewormer each month it's given, along with the heartworm medication. Heartgard = heartworm, hookworms and roundworms. Interceptor = heartworm, hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.
Stool samples and heartworm tests should be run yearly, as no medication is 100% effective.

My dog who is four years old now gets dewormed monthly from May until November. That is because he is on heartworm prevention medication. And it is normal dewormer also. But as the others have stated if they ingest fleas or all they eat is table scraps then they will needed to be dewormed more oftern. I know someone who only feeds their dogs table scraps and they have to deworm every month because they see the signs of worms. Hope this helps. For the person that made that comment about the vaccines having horrible side effects we are all entitled to our opions but dogs do need them. I mean if you do not get the rabies on in my state it is against the law you have ot have it and the distemper on they can get really sick from the diease this one prevents. Shots are a good thing espically for mulitipet homes. At least that is my two cents. I had a cat once and one day he stopped using his back legs and they said it was because of no shots he got a sickness that could have been prevented by a yearly shot. I had to have him put to sleep because he was suffering.

Puppies need to be dewormed at 2,4,6 & 8 weeks of age and then again at 12 & 16 weeks when they have theri second and third vaccinations. After that a stool sample should be taken in to get a fecal done and deworming done as necassary. Adult dogs should have fecal tests done at least twice yearly.
Do NOT wait until you see worms in the stool..often there is no sign of worms. The only way to know for sure is to get fecal tests done.
Do NOT use OTC dewormers..they are ineffective and can be dangerous to your dog.

As long as your dog is kept healthy, he or she should not get worms once they reach adulthood; however, your vet will advise you to have their feces tested for worms just in case they got them from something. Have your puppies dewormed asap, and your adult dogs tested for worms AT LEAST once a year.
Certain worms cannot "be seen" in the feces, as there are many different kinds. As your doctor for what signs to look for should your dog ever get worms.

You should look for signs of worms such as the dog is rubbing its rear end on the path or search the feces then use the de worm medicine.

With seven dogs I have a better chance of infestation. I worm my dogs every three months on a schedule. Heart worm preventative every month. I also treat my dog yard every month to prevent.

Depends on the wormer. It should say on the box. Some brands should be taken every 3 months, and others every month. The ones that you give every month are usually combination tablets that also include a heartwormer. But it should be taken regularly, dogs eat all kinds of gross things that we dont know about :)

you need to do it at least every year as a prevention!
Better to prevent than to cure. Believe me, you need to do that at least once a year, but twice is even better. It would be best if you call a vet and ask him for better instructions. But never wait until he actually get worms!
