I've heard about this documentary that was on the tv recently about a study that was done on a girl who drank at the weekend where they said one vodka and mixer is the equivalant to half a tobelorone. Does anyone know if this is true???? Also, a beer is the equivalent to a Mars bar...I exercise a lot and eat sensibly enough but would head out with my friends at the weekend for a session for one night. I'd drink vodka and mixers and could have anything from 5 to maybe 8 vodkas in the night, depending on the night of course. Am I throwing all my hard work during the week out the window??

No those comparisons are completely invalid.

Average Beer = 140 Calories
Low Carb Beer or Light Beer = 110 Calories.
Wine = 120 Calories (red wine is the best choice for alcohol for many different reasons)

Mixed drinks are where you can run into trouble since Pop and juice with a high sugar content are loaded with calories. However a "Rum and Diet (coke)" is only 80 calories which is great.

You can be a casual drinker and meet your health goals. Keep in mind the people who write the nutritional articles and make documentaries are typically the extremely "hard core" type and have dedicated their entire life to health and fitness. They see things through this perspective only, and fail to account for the fact that many of us like to do pursue other things in life (like having a social life!). I am in great shape, muscular with a low body fat percentage and enjoy two glasses of red wine during usually 3 or 4 of the weekdays, and get "drunk" with friends one of the weekends nights.

There are calories from alcohol, but the real problems are different. Excess alcohol damages the brain and the liver. Children born of women who drank alcohol duing the pregnancy can have very serious health problems because of it.

Women seem to tolerate less well than men, because of their livers. For a woman anyhting over 2 vodkas does not seem to be moderate.

See a recent Scientific American article which suggests that very moderate drinking of alcohol may be beneficial.

ok so basically alcohol has almost no nutrition but still hgih in calories. So for people trying to manage their weight alcohol really needs to be restricted because it has "empty" calories, that is to say, no vitamins or minerals for the calories you're eating. Also, apparently the chemicals in alcohol, mainly ethanol get burned up first for energy, so its less likely you'll burn fat when alcohol is in your system. Then throw in the mixers...which are pure sugar and whoa...instant calorie overdose. So i guess the safer option is spirits with diet drinks as mixers or low alcohol beers etc.
moderation is good.

Too many variables here. Vodka is carb-free, freinds of mine who enjoy a good time but were on low-carb diets stuck to vodka and did all right (aside form being tempermental and dumb from lack of carbs).

It takes a fair amount of calories to get alcohol OUT of your system, what you mix it with, and how much activity you're involved in while you're drinking. If you're drinking enough to put on weight, you've got a lot more problems than breaking your diet.

Bottom line: People don't get fat from drinking, they get fat from lack of excersize, bad diet, and chemical imbalances. You've probably heard that the stuff is actually good for you in moderate amounts. Anyway, if you're not enjoying life, who cares what your weight is?

For most grain (straight) alcohol, 1oz contains approx.70 calories. Alcohol is also the only substance I know of that can kill you if you quit drinking cold turkey. That info alone prevents me from drinking on a continual basis.

Well you certainly can be. Alcohol contains 6 carbohydrates per gram. Not to mention, if you eat any fatty food (fries, chicken wings etc.) your body will just store it as fat because your liver takes the alcohol to process first because it is essentially a poison.

Yes it is that bad. Alcoholic drinks are full of 'empty calories' and alcohol destroys your liver. Be healthy - drink juices instead.
