Getting or not getting a stitch is all about your breathing.
Learn to breath properly while running, fill you lungs and don't do short rapid breaths.

The only ways I know of preventing a stitch is to either run slowly or do lots of training so your body can handle the fast pace comfortably.
Most youngsters who go running for the first time will go too quick at the beginning and will develop a stitch in a fairly short time. Now the best way to handle this is to run through it and slow down slightly. Also remember to breath.
If he pushes himself too hard he will end up with multiple stitches which usually means having to slow down to a walk.

Can't advise much about preventing a stitch a part from eating banana's and not drinking too much water before you start.
However when you get a stitch, get a little stone and squeeze it in the hand opposite the side the stitch is.
If the stitch is in the right side, sqeeze the stone in the left hand and vice versa.
Hope he wins. Good luck

Make sure that he is amply hydrated but is not 'over hydrated' and that he eats a 'larger than normal' amount of carbs the night before his run. And tell him 'good luck' from me ... my son has always been a runner, and sometimes 'dealing with that' was difficult for me, but they sure are fun to watch, aren't they?

sometimes its good to start off with a fast walk and warm up the body. its not a good idea to just go into the country run without working up or any kind of sketches

No way of preventing it. Advise him that if he don't think about it...he won't get it.
Mind over matter...Lets hope he does well.
