- He only watches TV, Reads Newspapers, Naps, and talks to the Cat.
- Limited knowledge of Electronics, doesn't seem to get it when I teach him.

Well, I had the same problem picking a gift out for my 78 year old grandfather. I ended up getting him about $40.00 in lotto scratch off tickets. I was amazed that he loved it. It was something that he could sit and do ... and the best thing is ... is that he won about $120.00. Awesome huh. Maybe your Father would like a gift like this. If you have lotto where you are.
Hope I helped and good luck with finding something!

Hmm you know what, it is actually the opposite for me. A 37 woman dating a 27 year old man is fine with me but an elderly 70 year old man dating a girl 50 years younger than him sounds wrong

70 - hmmm... and you are close enough to him to buy him gifts... wonderful - don't BUY him anything. MAKE him something. It could be "his history" with the family in photo and such in a scrapbook... if you are going to buy anything... it could be a gag-something that has personal meaning to him... but I suggest you connect to what most he cherishes at 70 years old - HIS HISTORY and MEMORY.
When my uncle (my deceased dad's closest brother) turned 70, I had a ball with doing everything in in "70s". I had an "unpoppable balloon" filled with 70 one-dollar bills... it was a blast watching him trying to pierce, poke, punch it out... I got it from a novelty store... then I got him one of those newspapers you can find online with the headlines from the day he was born - another hoot... I (we actually, at his party) had 70 dominoes lined up so that when he tipped them over - the last one sang a funny song... another novelty I found at a store.
At 70, give him - MEMORIES... Think about it... the man was born during PROHIBITION, the GREAT DEPRESSION, WWII and MORE... there are all kinds of memorabilia you can share in remembering with him that he SURVIVED.
I think it is great that you are still hanging in with him to celebrate...
May your father have many, many more birthdays.

You didn't say what price range you were looking at, but a TiVo might work for him. Kinda pricey, but it's got a great user interface that anyone can use.
Does he have friends? A senior center? Would he like bridge lessons? A cruise?

when my in-laws got to that age we started doing different gifts.
examples:
subscription to t.v. guide, readers digest, national geographic, whatever magazines suited them.
gift certificates for the grocery store.
prepaid gas card for whatever gas station they use.
they owned their own home so we filled their oil tank one year and that kept the furnace going for half the winter.
prepay the cablevision bill for their television.
prepay the basic phone bill.
one year we even did the fruit of the month club.
prepay the newspaper subscription.
at that age its hard to find something they 'need', so we try to take care of some of the basics and they can buy themselves the 'fun' stuff!
good luck

You know I used to have such a hard time trying to buy something for my stepfather until one day, I decide to get him one of those little sound machines, you know the one that has the sounds of the ocean, birds, thunderstorms, things like that....well, it was as if I had given him gold....he loves it till this day...I got it at Brookstone, but you can get them almost anywhere....hope this helps you, if nothing else it will relax him.

I think he feels lonely and it is better to find him a pair to understand him better. the difference of age between father and child are great and they never realize each other but a pair just his age or may be a little younger can help

bring him to his favourite outlet or store where he usually gets his lotto cards and buy the cards (depends on how much you want to spend). collect all the scratched cards and arrange it on a baseball cap as a souvenir for his 70th bday.
