Your body paralyses itself when you go into sleep so that you do not act out your dreams. People who sleep walk are suffering from Somnambulism where they will sleep talk and walk about, although this only happens during REM sleep.
However another common problem is that people half wake upwhen their body is still paralysed. It is unlikely to be a seizure in that sense, but people who have it maybe suffering from some other problem, either stress, or drug use, which is causing it.
As a sidenote, people who report 'alien abductions' are actually suffering from this sleep paralysis. They wake, often still half dreaming, and report shadowy figures in the room. During the height of the X-files TV show, the number of reported cases of abductions went up across the USA!

When you sleep, and particularly during REM sleep, your body 'paralyses' itself from the neck down. Effectively preventing you from acting out the very vivid dreams that are common in this stage of sleep. Sometimes you do wake up during this stage of sleep and it takes a while for the brain to catch on to the fact that you are actually awake, it usually passes after a while and you can move again. If you are really worried about it see your doctor.

You are probably having an out of body experience or astral traveling. It happens to me a lot. When we go to sleep, sometimes we go places and our body wants to awake before our spirit is back. That is why we cant wake up. Silvia Brown talks about this a lot on the Montel Williams Show. She is on every Wednesday. She suggests that we say a prayer before we go to sleep, that we dont return to our body so abruptly, because it can be a little scary. Good luck to you and happy travels. Peace

I have not only heard of this I used to do this and then it just stopped. This hasn't happened to me since I moved from the place I grew up back in 1998. I never knew what caused it but it sure was scary cause the last time I did it I liked to have never came out of it. I thought I was going to die.

Usually, it's when you are literally half-asleep. Your brain is split up into different parts for different functions, and the region that controls and regulates physical rest/sleeping was "asleep", while your mind was awake. This usualy happens to me when I am preoccupied with a lot of thoughts before I fall asleep. It helps me to just relax and try to fall asleep like I normally do, which doesn't require movement.
