some dr's will grade how bad the luxation is. if he's not walking, usually only surgery can correct the problem. how is he doing with his addison's? is he responding well to the meds used to control it? if he is and your vet thinks surgery will be the best answer and allow your dog to live a quality life, then the dr will choose the anesthetic that will be the safest for your dog. make sure before surgery you do a complete blood chemistry and cbc. also ask about monitoring equipment for during the surgery. the normal procedure for this is to make a hold through the joint and suture the patella back into place. dog's usually recover from this surgery in a month or so. but will have use of the leg again in a week or maybe a little longer. my dog had this done, but she was only 2 years old and had no other health problems. she's doing great at 5 years now, we've not had any other problems. you need to talk to your vet and ask them what their expectations are, and how well they think your dog will do with the surgery. good luck.

your vet will be able to tell you about the surgery and the risks. but no 11 years and if doing well with addison's is not too old for this surgery.

Wow, 11 yrs old is really old to being doing surgery.
Some dogs do OK with luxating patella, especially small dogs like Westies. I would get a second opinion to see if he really needs the surgery.
Good luck!

My 2 12 months previous beagle became clinically determined with this those days, and that i've got been given particularly a different clarification. first of all, I wasn't given any grades.. He reported it wasn't undesirable, and could get gradually worse in the subsequent 5-6 years. He reported interior that factor era, she ought to develop arthritis doubtlessly. How can a 2-12 months previous maltese have arthritis already? additionally, i became advised it became between 800-1200 and my vet isn't low priced! My vet additionally advised me that often times the knee can come out of socket if the dogs is enjoying tough, and thats why they limp for an afternoon or 2. He reported if she became limping for greater desirable than that or if it became occurring all of the time--then she could want the surgical operation previous to later. Its been 6 mos and it hasn't got here approximately as quickly as for the period of that factor. i will probable do surgical operation on her sometime next 12 months and shop up for it. FYI--I regarded into insurance. Pre-present circumstances and/or hereditary circumstances like this at the instant are not coated below any situation. All that being reported, i could get a 2d opinion. it is accessible that she has progressed that a techniques--yet your vet additionally must be attempting to scare you into having the operation carried out today (further money for him). stable luck!
