My daughter goes hours almost a whole day without talking and as days go by she just gets worse. Is this a medical condition or do you think she is just going through a stage in life? She is only 2 years old.

From a Grad Student's perspective taking a full time load of Speech Pathology and Audiology courses, just to be sure, you should have her evaluated by her pediatrician, audiologist and maybe a speech therapist.
Did she speak before? If you make noises near her, does she look for the noise? If she follows the noise, chances are it's not a hearing problem. Try making noises on opposites sides of the room so that you are mock-testing from the right side of her head and the left. Deaf children babble as do normal hearing children, but since they lack to hear the feedback they just stop babbling.
Try spending much time doing activities with her. Isolation, sort of being in her own world is a sign of Autism S.
Again, try seeking professional attention and in the mean time research, do certain exercises, b/c when you have your appt. with the doc/specialist they are going to ask tons of questions. Good Luck.

hey don't worry so much all kids reach different mile stones at different times and i have known children who started talking at one and iv'e know kids that didn't start talking untill they were four so relax as for the person who mentioned autism we have two atustic kids in my family a neice and a nephew. your doc would have already pointed out signs if your daughter was atustic the things to look for in that just so you know is interaction does she interact with you or does she just sit and stare into space does she laugh or cry does she make eye contact with you if you answer no to the first question and yes to the others than she is fine... my girlfriend who had the 4 year old late talker went to every specilast she could find and they all told her the same thing everything checked out fine he was just a late talker .good luck and we knew that both our neice and nephew by age 1 1/2 were atustic it is pretty easy for a doc to spot.

Is there ever a time when she did talk? Does she talk? I know that I didn't talk at all until I was four years old so age when kids first talk varies widely. However, if she was talking and, for no apparent reason, stopped then I would take her to the doctor. Better safe then sorry.

sorry to say that you may need to get her checked for autism. thats what it sounds like. or hopefully she is just not a big talker and will be a quiet person. or maybe she'll grow out of this and talk more later on when she feels like it. good luck

Even if you think it's an obstinance issue, it wouldn't hurt to be checked by a pediatrician. Play it safe-find out.

If she has the ability to talk and just doesn't, I wouldn't worry....if she doesn't seem to know how to talk, I'd have her tested for autism....good luck!
