I dont think its an Artichoke you are talking about but a Choko. It has a nothingness favour. It used to be used with preserved fruit mainly pears as it takes on the favour of the pear. they are ok cooked and then mashed with butter and black pepper. And also the grow on a vine.

It is spelt Choko
& it grows on a vine & it has a very nice vegetable ( But Encarter calls it a fruit ) you peel the skin off & cut it in half & then take the hard whitish seed out & you are left with a green flesh.You can boil until tender but i steam it
they are great to grow in aus back yard & will climb all over a mango tree if you let it
I'm not sure if it fruits in winter or spring

Once I was watching a cooking show and they were preparing choke and I don't know what they were talking about until they said artichoke, the green spiny vege.
