First you need to decide what you want from a dog. Do you want it to love everyone? Or just You? Be a couch potato, or jog with you?

Does the size matter? Do you want a dog that needs and gives constant affection, or a dog that loves you but is more independent?

A dog that is good for people with allergies? Good with kids? A dog that needs to be groomed vs. a dog that sheds?

Once you figure out what you want...you can then research the breeds: post another question with that information here, or go to petfinders.com....where you can find rescue dogs....and the foster homes/shelters already have assecessed their personalities.

It sounds like this is your first dog..or the first time you will have one as an adult.

In which case..I highly suggest a dog about 3 years old...from a rescue org...which already has some training,,..and can break you in...without making you crazy during the puppy years.

Best of Luck!

There is not one specific breed of dog that is right for everyone. There are breeds like basset hounds that are good for older or not very active people and then there are Jack Russell terriers who are good for very active people who have the time to take them for several walks a day.

All of my dogs have been mixed breeds from shelters. They seem to adapt well to any kind of household. And there are so many shelter pets who need loving homes. Why buy a dog when you can rescue one? A good site to go on to find homeless pets in your area is www.petfinder.com.

You will feel so good inside if you decide to rescue and you will get a very grateful dog.

It depends on if you want a small dog or big dog. I hear golden retrievers are great larger breed pets. If you're looking for more of a medium sized breed, I know Border Collies are extremely smart and playful. Personally, I think Yorkshire Terriers are the best small breed out there. They are small, cute, affectionate, have a VERY unique personality, and they aren't yippy. For higher maintenance you can keep their hair long, (but they don't shed, so don't worry) or you can cut it short, which gives them more of a youthful look. Yorkies can get a little expensive, but it is worth it. You must find a decent breeder, though.

Of course this is a question of opinion and answers could only come from experience so my vote is for the Shar-Pei. They're very intelligent, well behaved and passively tempered. When it comes to adopting a Shar-Pei into your family this particular breed is sensitive and playful and should the time ever arise that you and your family needs protecting you can count on the Shar-Pei to be the first to react (they're very protective of they're families or "packs") Plus they're super wrinkly and way cute. So if you're looking for a medium to large breed, short haired dog my vote is for the Shar-Pei all Da WaY!

*P.S. if this is your first dog and you don't want a breed that's too high maintenance I'd suggest a short haired dog.

Depends on what type of behavior traits you are looking for and what your lifestyle is. Do you want a lap dog, a watch dog, or a dog that loves to fetch and loves water?

For example if you're a couch potato, then a dalmation usually is a bad choice since they tend to be active and need lots of exercise.

There is no one best for everyone. We have our favorite(s). I love Siberian huskies, but I would never risk having another one after sad experiences. I like almost all dogs, purebred or not.

If I was getting a big dog, I'd go for a Labrador retriever. For a small dog, I like beagles.

Depends on your lifestyle and how the dog will fit in with it, depends on the time you are prepared to spend with it, eg. playing, grooming, exercising etc....
