I have 3 kids - 25,24 & 20. They were not taught to spell the normal way - but kind of by osmosis I guess. No dictionaries but at least they do know how to use spell check. The kids never had an English book in all the years of school. May just be a California thing.

Teach? Learn? Are these words even in the English language anymore? Weren't they purged and replaced by "self-esteem" and "social indoctrination?"
I marvel at the ability of the State to continually fail, and then ask for more money because "it's for the kids."

On the good side, however, people who use this forum are reading an alphabet and dealing with a structured language. Some people are foreigners, learning English; some are just lazy; and me, I'm just sick of watching TV....

Considering the spelling and grammar that often appears here, one certainly has cause to wonder. But for many participants, English is not the first languages, and some allowances need to be made. But skipping spell check is not one of them.

I hear you, but remember, people from all around the world use Y! Answers. Some don't care about spelling. Others don't double-check their spelling. People who don't speak, read, and/or write English very well use Y! Answers. Others are very young. So while many of us have no excuse as we don't or shouldn't fall into these categories, there are some who we should have "spelling compassion" on.

God bless.

Very good question, but spell checks still let some things get through such as, for example, "check spell" in your question. Learning English and careful checking are still better than "spell check" but I would appreciate if people at least used it, as well.

I think English is currently being taught by television. No spelling involved.

Oh, I know. I'm a grammar freak! I subconsciously correct everyone's grammar, saying "well" or "ly" after they always make a mistake. I also just hate seeing bad spelling.
People just don't seem to have time to spell correctly anymore, personally, I really blame text-messaging.
I'm going to stop now, because I'm starting to sound old. XD

It is simply amazing. The percentage of questions that are incomprehensible is just boggling.

wut u talkin bout i hud englesh!!!!!!

In all seriousness, it's just net speak. Unfortunately, what may be well and good for a chat room isn't appropriate everywhere, but it's becoming increasing acceptable to type like this regardless of the forum.
