HD Ready simply means that the television will produce a HD
level of resolution, but is does not come with a HD tuner. You
will have to get a HD tuner from either your cable company or
buy one separately. Plasma is just a type of television screen.

The two previous answers got it wrong. HD Ready simply means the set is capable of delivering a high definition picture, but needs a "set top" high definition tuner to take advantage of the higher resolutions. HD plasma generally means the set has a high definition tuner built in, so its good to go for high def out of the box.
(I did a lot of research on high def stuff before I purchased mine, and feel very confident in my answer)

HD-Ready sets have a HDTV receiver/decoder built-in, while HD-Capable sets simply act as a monitor and require the addition of an external receiver/decoder to receive high-definition signals. Since most HD-Ready sets only include receivers for off-air broadcasts (i.e. signals that are received using an antenna), you will still need a separate HD converter to view HD programs on GCI Cable

with an HD ready TV you don't need an additional set top box to watch hd programming. if you have satellite, or digital cable, you just have to get a cable card from your cable provider. if you don't have cable, all you have to do is get an hd antenna to watch over the air hd.
with a regular HD plasma, or TV, you have to have an additional hd set top box from your cable or satellite provider to be able to watch HD programming.
