I was skeptical but not anymore. I think it has already begun at the algorithm level, adaptive systems. But the first sign or real AI is when it becomes a meme. That is, when some function becomes ubiquitous and is used over and over, like some software code that is done and gets included forever in the different OS. In hardware there are open-source cores you can download, like serial ports and such that get incorporated into chips again and again.
As a natural consequence of complexity these innovations settle into obscurity. They coalesce into things that may be greater than one person could understand. Not only is AI possible as a deliberate effort, but it will be possible as an unintentional effort and we may find our selves trying to squash it with difficulty.
The move to nano-technology will speed up the process.
I want to qualify intelligence as not being life. Which it not to say it cannot have self-awareness, all AI systems have this. I do not think it will ever feel. But it will repair connections, it does now. The TCP-IP protocol in kind of a remarkable example of adaptation. People were integral but the adaptive solutions can be shown to achieve results.

Already done. Voice recognition in telephony has become commonplace; it is a form of AI. So is the Roomba vacuum cleaner. More applications will arise as computers get smaller and cheaper.

i dont think its possible, i just dont see how a machine could make desicions that arent programmed into it, the roomba vaccuum is not A.I.. everything it does is programmed into it. it doesnt make its own decisions.

I have real concerns about man's ability to create intelligence of any kind.
(Beam me up, Mr. Scott. No sign of intelligent life down here, anywhere!).

Self Referentiality is the reason why it won't happen. Define "I" and get back to me.
