There really isn't a cheap way to cure this problem. I have 4 felines too:) and had a horrible problem with fleas when I took in two stray kittens. I heard the advertisement on the tv a gazillion times about Petmeds.com and went to their website and orded some flea spray for the furniture and carpets and some of that advantage to put on their backs. It took about a week but I noticed they were scratching less. It had worked way better than bathing the cats in flea shampoo. That was real expensive flea shampoo too and it didn't even work. All it did was luster and make their hair all shiny. I would either order off their or go to a nearby vet and ask for some of that front line or advantage it really works. Make sure you also ask your vet for a worming pill for each of them. Because fleas carry tapeworms inside them and when the cats eat the fleas the tapeworms are ingested. Just make sure you don't give each cat a pill at the same time, because if one throws it up you may not know which one that did it...the pills shouldn't be too much but I think the advantage cost like $30.00 a piece for 4 so it was spendy but it was free shipping so that was nice.
I hope that helps.

Not necessarily cheap, but the best and really only way to get rid of fleas is with either Frontline or Advantage. Preferably the ones that kill the larvae and eggs, which would be Frontline Plus and Advantix I think. That's probably your best bet, because if you just kill all the adult fleas, like a bath does, the babies hatch and after a few weeks, your inundated again. Don't go with the hartz, or sargeants, or any of the ones you see in the local stores, they don't work at all. Here's a link, this is the cheapest I've found them.

You could buy stuff for the house, but I don't like using chemicals, I have a bird, fish, kids. Just vacuum a lot, I've heard sprinkling some Borax laundry booster on the rugs/carpets, and letting it sit about 24 hours before vacuuming is supposed to help kill them as well.

Here is the only way I've been able to get rid of fleas for sure. If your cats go outside in the yard, then they will bring them in. There is no cheap way, especially if you're infested. You didn't say if they did so I'll tell you that way. The first thing you do is bath the cats (if they'll let you) with a good flea shampoo. Then two days later you need to put Advantage on them. This stuff really works for 30 days. You apply it to the back of their shoulder blades & rub it in good. The reason you need to wait two days after bathing is because Advantage won't work as good until the natural oils come back into the skin. The bath drys it out. If you can't bath your cats then just use a flea powder. You can just put Advantage on without using anything else first but it works a lot better if it can start out on an animal that's flea free. Now you should bomb your house. Go to the store doesn't have to be a pet store, grocery stores have the bombs too.Make sure the bombs you get say they get rid of fleas. You'll also get rid of roaches * other bugs too. (o; Be sure & get enuff bombs to cover your living area but don't get too many. Come back & set off the bombs. While they're working you & your cats need to go on an outing or something for several hours. The bombs will tell you how long before you can come back in your house. When you get back, leave the cats outside in the car or crate or where ever you've got them. You need to open all the windows & air out your place. Turn on fans & such to help with the airing. When the oder is gone, it's then safe to let the cats in. The next thing you do is vaccum & dust off all the furniture. After you vaccum, always empty the bag or canister cause it could have some eggs in it that might have made it. If it's a canister get rid of it outside. The cats should still be flea free unless you took them somewhere else that was infected. The next day you can apply the Advantage & you're flea free. Now if your cats go outside like mine do, but just in your yard, they've got some stuff for the yard called "Bug be gone". This is great stuff & it works. It has a money back gaurantee. If this is the case then after you set off the bombs you would apply this to your yard. You need one of those things you push that's called a spreader??? You put the chemical in it & it lets it out the bottom as you push it around the yard. Then you use the hose to wet it down.
#1-Go to store & buy all the materials you'll need.
#2- Bath the cats. or at least apply flea power.
#3.-Bomb your place & then apply Bug be gone to the yard, patio, etc.
#4.-Go off somewhere with you & your cats for a couple of hours.
#5.-Come home & air out your place.
#6.-Vaccum & dust the place, carring all the stuff outside & dump it, preferbly off your property.
#7.-Bring cats in.
#8.- Day after next day apply Advantage to cats.
This is a lot of work but it's the only thing I've found that does work 100%.After this, if you keep the meds on your cats monthly, religously, you'll stay fea free. Oh yeah, you don't have to bath the cats after the first time unless they've gotten infested again.
Good luck..................Blues

For treating cats: Get a flea treatment lotion that you place on the back of their neck. Flea shots are expensive. In regards to the stuff you mix in their food, cats know it's there, and don't care for it.
You also need to treat carpets/fabrics, where the fleas can hide (believe me, it SUCKS to be the victim of fleas once they get bored of the cats). We used 'Siphotrol 1000' from the vet. It was fairly cheap, and it also inhibits flea growth for 6months afterwards. More importantly, it worked really well! Spray your couch, carpets and your mattress. Also make sure to wash your bedding or any clothes that aren't put away. Use warm water, and make sure to dry thouroughly in the dryer.
Good Luck! Although this may not seem 'easy,' if you get them on the first treatment, you don't have to spend money and time trying again.

Well When I first got my cat It got Fleas every two three months! so What I did is I went to the vet and bough this Medecine that you put on the back of its neck and then you leave it stuck in its cat box for 30 minutes and the fleas start dying.(you can also get this at walmart for a lot cheaper since you have 4 cats).....
Ok so after than make them wear flea collars and try to see if they go near couches that have a lot of dust since that is prob why they get fleas! GOOD luck

Get a few white bowls fill with water and a few drops of dish soap, place one on the floor in each room, leave 1 or 2 days, then change the water, you will notice fleas.. change the water. and repeat... buy a flea comb, a good one is about 6 dollars, comb your cats (when removing fur from the comb also deposit this in a bowl with dish soap and water).... spray your house with a store bought flea spray... and wash all the cats blankets etc. Do NOT use a flea collar, cats have been know to hang themselves with one.... Now the water and soap does work - just takes time...

Frontline, Frontline, Frontline.
Please do not use Hartz flea collars, they can kill your pet.
visit www.hartzvictims.org
and this happened to me too. Nearly killed my cat Tommis.
A thousand dollars later, and a very traumatized cat ( and mommy)...... now I tell everyone and only use FRONTLINE!
Flea Collars work by slowly seeping into the bloodstream, and poisoning the cat in such small increments, it theoretically should not hurt the cat, but poison bugs when they bite and kill them. Yeah right. My cat's airway closed within 2 hours of putting that collar on him. Frontline, however, works BETTER and only coats the fur and lays in the first layer of skin for the cat, and poisons the bugs on contact. The issues with Frontline ) or similar depending on your country) as opposed to Hartz flea collars and such is like 100000 to 1.
do visit www.hartzvictims.org to see photos of the poor kittys harmed by big corporate Hartz Mountain.
Good luck!

STOP LETTING YOUR CATS GO OUTDOORS! And, now you're going to have to use front line on every single cat ($40 per month) and treat them for at LEAST 4 months. Plus, vaccum twice a day and change all your sheets, the litter, anywhere the cats have been. Cats are meant to stay indoors unless you want fleas..
