Define the difference between a nerd and geek in terms of weirdness. Like a nerd is weird, but a geek is really weird, or something like that. Yahoo Answers suggested I put it into Singles and Dating, and it's one of the most popular sections anyway, so don't go around saying how this isn't related to Singles and Dating.

A nerd is 'weird' in that he has a general interest in knowledge while a geek has a more specialized interest in a particular field (think star trek geek).

geeks are the guys who can play FF 7 in less than 24 hours and have the original D and D. Nerds are the smart anti-social kind who are too insecure to talk to pretty girls. the good news is that geek guys can get geek girls. and nerds can get pretty girls once they are rich like Bill Gates. But poor nerds are doomed and anti-social geeks are doomed. I'm a semi geek but I'm learning to be happy with me no matter what I am. And I suggest the same for you. If you think your cool then girls will too. and vice versa.

A nerd is your typical dude with a plastic pocket protector, horrible fashion sense and tape holding his glasses together. A geek is actually a much older word which refers to a carnival act where the "geek" would bite the head off a live chicken as some sort of weird entertainment.

A nerd is like a helpless cute smart guy who's just shy. A geek is a brainiac who's so smart he shows off all the time or is too shy to talk to anybody else except his little geek friends. All in all, there's not much of a difference to me.

Nerd: –noun Slang. 1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.
(as defined by dictionary.com)

Geek: 1. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.
2. a peculiar or offensive person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
3. an expert in computers (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
(dictionary.com)

Personally I think a nerd is a shy person who is a loner and thinks star trek is the coolest thing in the world. A geek can be cool, but he's very much into technology and knowledge.

Words such as nerd and dork are similar to the word "geek". It is commonly believed that the word "geek" originates with side-show "circus geeks" — performers at carnivals who swallow various live animals, live insects, and so forth. Sometimes this would extend to biting the heads off of snakes, chickens, or other small livestock.

A nerd is a studious, supposedly non-athletic person with few social goals outside their immediate circle. A geek farts in the bathtub and bites the bubbles.
