Atheism is the disbelief in the existence of any deities. We simply disbelieve one more god than our Christian fellows. That is the end of the debate, really. The Christians that enjoy the same freedom of/from religion that we do have no reason to justify their choices. Blaming these people in this forum for a bloody and violent past is a lame attempt at discrediting their integrity. My grandfather beat his wife, this does not logically suggest that all grandsons are guilty of beating their wives. Some are, most are not. Although many Christians have an excellent record of placing representatives of their views in our three branches of government does not mean that all Christians are hoping to turn America into a theocracy. Insulting people for their beliefs by asking juvenile questions, ant proposing sophmoric logic statement is embarassing. The childness of most atheists in this community is insulting to the majority of atheist that think, feel, and act.

Every group of people who hold similar beliefs are subject to reproof. This is a principal of morality, not religion, and you have eloquently spoken. High regard should be given to people who do not blindly support intolerance, immaturity, provocation, and insulting behavior based soley on a shared philosophy, regardless of that philosophy. Thank you for displaying the positive qualities that most atheists possess, but few display in this forum.

I have to agree that a lot of atheists act childishly, however one could point out that there are also childish theists out there.

There are quite a few theists out there that are good decent people, there are likely to be just as many good and decent atheists. Problems arise from the fact that atheists are consistantly assaulted by the views of their Christian brothers.

Examples are due perhaps?

When I told my parents I did not believe in their god, they beat me. When I told my girlfriend I did not believe in her god, she dumped me. I am surrounded by a world that declares on a fairly regular basis that theism is the RIGHT way, and being in a rather small minority, at times one can't help but get defensive, or even angry.

I embraced a policy long ago, oddly enough borrowed from a book, that bored me to death, and also from a movie that is just downright annoying. Two simple rules, that help me daily.

1) "Love your neighbor" - It's in the bible, look it up
2) "Be excellent to each other." -Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

So basically, can't we all just get along?

From some of the past answers I've read asked by athiests, I'd say you're justified.

Even if a few Christians get pushy or even act like jerks, how does acting like jerks back make us seem any better?

Let's take the moral high ground.

"From a moral perspective, atheists have never killed another person for their beliefs or started a war. "

What about Communist China and The USSR? Last time I checked communists were/are athiests. Just simply being an athiest doesn't mean you aren't going to do incredibly evil and stupid things.

And I think you're exaggerating when you say they've killed "millions" of people. If you're refering to the witch trials, the new estimates are about 45,000-60,000 over a 400 year period.

Absolutely not. Christians are actively pushing their belief system. Their beliefs are not harmless. They are based on ignorant superstition and disregard for known realities. We know from history the potential consequences when people who think they are on a mission for god acquire power. For the future of our planet, theism must be countered by education and reason wherever possible. The fervor shown by some Atheists on this site comes from frustration in dealing with closed minded theists who are blind to what is so obvious to them.

I will never scold you for anything. I am a sinner saved by grace. I simply choose to rely on God through my faith in Jesus. I have no right to judge you or anyone else. The reason I am here is because my life changed drastically once I received Christ in my life and I allowed the Holy Spirit to guide me in a new direction. I made some really bad mistakes in my early life. I accepted God's forgiveness and tried to apologize to most of the people that I had hurt in the past I try to use the Bible as a manual for life.Every answer to lifes questions is in there.I had a fellow collegue that was Atheist..When her son was killed I asked her who she turned to in her time of grief. She said her husband but it wasn't doing much good because he was trying to deal with his own grief. To make a long story short, she accepted Christ and felt the comfort that I was speaking of. jesus promised us that He woul not leave us comfortlesss. He promised the Holy Spirit to guide us. For me it has worked and my faith increases even as I am writing this response.
God bless.

Hmmm, are you really an Atheist? Many Christians on here can be equally scolded for being rude and narrow minded. It's kind of a conversation killer to tell anyone who believes differently than you do that they're going to hell. It would be nice to see more respect and actual dialogue.

What's really and truly sad, is that the sophmoric logic is a huge improvement from what we get in return from the Fundie Xians.

If you don't think Xians are trying to turn America into a theocracy, I think you're naive indeed.

But I'll agree that the namecalling and insults are uncalled for...but that has to go both ways. It's a kneejerk reaction to insult people back when they condescend to you or tell you how you're going to hell.

A nobel atheist. I'm impressed. You're right. Although christians do want to influence the government for good, we don't want to take over the government. The worst thing that ever happened to the Roman empire was that it was taken over by christianity in about 300AD. That was the beginning of the corruption of the church which lasted 1200 years until the reformation. No, I have no desire to see a theocracy in this country.

I agree. On the inverse, I believe all nutcase religious people should lighten up too. I do question why you single out the Christian religion though. Are there any other religions you don't believe in?

You're absolutely right. You know what, I feel embarrassed when christians answer other christians questions by trying to humiliate a" so-called "brother or sister in Christ.
